摘要: Two curved arch rib supports are provided with a pre-shaped flexible membrane cover attached to the ribs; the ends of the ribs are hinged on a common locus at base supports. When erected, a saddle shaped roof is formed to which contoured end walls may be added. Additional modules may be joined to the structure so formed, by applying a pre-shaped and independent fabric membrane or cable net attached by rings to only each of the two structure base pivot axles. A catenary cable and web belt stress concentrator connect each ring to its opposite on each separate structure. The cable and web are of pre-set length and are shorter than the perimeter of the outer chord of the beam. Alternatively, for joining a plurality of the saddle shaped structures, geodetic stress concentrators may be added to enhance and maintain the shape and performance of the cable net, thus stabilizing and drawing pre-stress or wind reactions from the membrane and facilitating their efficient flow to the ground anchors in purely tensile forces.

摘要: The present invention is directed to improved tank or containment vessels and processes and apparatus for their construction. The tanks or containment vessels usually consist of circular walls resting on a base and a dome supported by the walls. The dome of the subject prestressed tank is formed by deploying or creating a membrane on the base, applying one or more layers of rigidifying material (and prestressing or reinforcing material if needed) on the membrane and then forming said membrane into a dome before the rigidifying material sets by the selective introduction of compressed air at appropriate locations between the base and the membrane. The hardening of the rigidifying material results in a composite preformed rigid roof or dome having a membrane liner and an overlay of composite construction. Once the walls are created, air pressure can be further utilized to raise this preformed composite dome upward to a predetermined height after which it is fastened to the walls. An appropriate air seal may be used to prevent excessive leakage of air between the walls and the dome and to assist in the raising of the dome. Utilizing this air cushion procedure to raise the dome to its proper location, eliminates the need of scaffolding and other costly support structures. Integral seismic anchors may be also used to complete the construction process to protect the structure against earthquakes and other tremors by anchoring the dome to the tank walls and the tank walls to the base in a manner whereby the seismic forces are translated parallel to the wall instead of radially to the wall.

摘要: A family of space structures having subdivided faces, where such faces are subdivided into rhombii in non-periodic arrangements. The rhombii are derived from regular planar stars with n vectors, and the source space structures are composed of regular polygons. The family includes: globally symmetric structures where the fundamental region is subdivided non-periodically, or globally asymmetric structures composed of regular polygons which are subdivided non-periodically or asymmetrically. The rhombii can be further subdivided periodically or non-periodically. The family further includes all regular polyhedra in the plane-faced and curve-faced states, regular tessellations, various curved polygons, cylinders and toroids, curved space labyrinths, and regular structures in higher-dimensional and hyperbolic space. The structures can be isolated structures or grouped to fill space. Applications include architectural space structures, fixed or retractable space frames, domes, vaults, saddle structures, plane or curved tiles, model-kits, toys, games, and artistic and sculptural works realized in 2- and 3-dimensions. The structures could be composed of individual units capable of being assembled or disassembled, or structures which are cast in one piece, or combination of both. Various tensile and compressive structural systems, and techniques of triangulation could be used as needed for stability.

摘要: A light-weight portable structure having a plurality of planar panels joined together to form a dome-shaped structure. The generally trapezoidal-shaped panels have arcuate side edges instead of linear side edges in order to create the proper tension and cause the flexible panels to form the desired dome structure. The individual panels are joined together by H-shaped connectors extending the full side length of the panels. The side edges of the panels are fitted with a U-shaped locking caps before being inserted into the connectors. The caps of adjacent side panels are inserted into the open ends of the H-shaped connectors and are held in place by the connectors. As the panels are connected in series standing upright on the base edges of the panels, the cumulative forces used to insert the panels causes the partial structure to curve in a spiral manner. The spiral is unwound and the panels are pushed out at the base of the panels to form the circular shape of the structure and to connect the two free ends of the series of panels. This process transfers forces towards the narrower, top edge of the panels, which causes the panels and connectors to bend towards the center of the structure to form a dome.

摘要: A structure having a movable dome-type roof including a plurality of independently movable shell sections which nest one beneath the other. A frame superstructure is arched over the dome to support the upper ends of the shell sections. The lower edges of the shell sections are mounted on self-powered carriages and are independently shiftable about a circular base of the structure. By selectively shifting individual shell sections, the dome may be contracted or expanded as desired. The superstructure may be mounted on a circular track or on a pair of linear tracks to expedite the opening and closing of the dome.

摘要: Domed and cylindrical shell structures of interwoven lightweight strips of metal or other lightweight materials, and method of constructing such shell structures. Several weaving patterns are disclosed which provide requisite flexibility of woven strips to enable the weave to be formed into a desired configuration such as a domed roof or a cylindrical silo. These shells have high strength-to-weight ratios and inherently attenuate seismic vibrations to provide protection against earthquakes. The strips are interwoven on a flat surface at ground level and then hoisted into place. Modules of portions of the shell can be prefabricated and joined to other like modules at the job site to form the complete shell.

摘要: An air-inflated fabric roof of hyperbolic paraboloidal shape including a cable network therein and covering a building or other structure, or a part of a building such as an atrium. The building includes an annular rigid outer structure enclosing an inner area covered by the air-inflated hyperbolic paraboloidal fabric roof having the cable network therein. A pressurization system maintains the building interior at a predetermined pressure above ambient atmospheric pressure to inflate the fabric roof. The cable network includes a rigid, continuous ring member connected to the annular rigid outer structure. A first set of cables extends across the central opening of the ring member in parallel in a first or X direction. A second set of cables extends across the central opening in parallel in a second or Y direction substantially perpendicular to the first direction. The cables are tensioned so that their points of intersection lie in a hyperbolic paraboloidal surface having the general equation ##EQU1## Two tie cables extend diagonally across the central opening of the ring member and lie in the Z=O plane. The fabric material is fastened to the cable network. The hyperbolic paraboloidal cable network provides support for the fabric roof even in the absence of air pressurization or in the presence of large loads on the roof, for example a heavy layer of snow.

摘要: The self-supporting element (1) is of great length and of the type formed by a framework of metal section members (7-9-10-11-14-15) and an insulating cladding supported by the framework. The element is characterized in that its cladding is in a single unit and formed by a composite comprising an outer skin (17), an inner skin (18) and an insulating blanket (19) formed by mineral wool fibres which extend in a direction perpendicular to the parallel planes of the skins. The cladding (16) is supported exclusively by the two lateral beams (9,10) of the framework.
