A wheel bearing assembly for transmitting an automotive drive force from an electrically operated drive motor (1) to a wheel (52) is designed to have a compact and lightweight structure and to enable standardization of assemblage of electric motorcars. The wheel bearing assembly includes an outer member (41) formed integrally with a radially outwardly extending flange (44) for securement of the assembly to an automotive fame structure, and an inner member (42) having a center bore (49) and adapted to be driven by the drive motor 1 through an axle (60) fixedly inserted into the center bore (49). Each of the inner and outer members (41) and (42) has two raceways with respective rows of rolling elements (43) intervening therebetween. The inner member (42) has a radially outwardly extending wheel mounting flange (42) to which the wheel (52) is secured.

In a construction in which a double row rolling bearing and a constant velocity joint are mounted to a hub wheel, a fixing ring fixedly mounted to a vehicle-outer side opening of the hub wheel is sandwiched between a vehicle-outer side end face of an outer ring shaft of the constant velocity joint and a bolt integrally mounted to the shaft in the axial direction, thereby coupling the outer ring of the constant velocity joint to the hub wheel. In this case, a simple coupling operation only for mounting the bolt to the shaft suffices, and a pre-load that has been applied to the rolling bearing is maintained invariably.

Roll and process of manufacturing roll for the smoothing of paper webs, which has a hard roll core including in particular metal. The roll core is provided at its outside with an elastic covering layer which includes an elastic matrix material and fibers embedded into the matrix material. The diameter of the fibers is less than about 800 nm so that the surface of the elastic covering layer has an extremely high smoothness, in particular an Ra value of less than around about 0.6 mm. The thickness of the elastic covering layer amounts to between about 3 and about 20 mm. In addition to the fibers, powdery fillers are embedded in the matrix material whose outer dimensions are each less than about 1 nullm at least in one direction.

A conductive roll for an electrophotographic apparatus, which eliminates deposition unevenness onto the roll surface, inhibits occurrence of non-uniform roll resistance value, and gives a satisfactory image free from density unevenness. The surface of the conductive roll is corona-treated by arranging the conductive roll oppositely to, and in parallel with a discharging electrode, and impressing a voltage onto the electrode while rotating the conductive roll. With the conductive roll subjected to a corona treatment of the roll surface, deposition unevenness onto the roll surface is eliminated, a uniform roll resistance value is maintained throughout the entire surface even after use for a long period of time, thus permitting maintenance of stable properties.

An improved bowed roll assembly and system that can be adjusted during operation to alter critical speeds to outside the range of the operational speed of the assembly, and methods of altering critical speeds of the roll assembly during its operation to inhibit harmonic vibration are provided. In one embodiment, the bowed roll assembly system includes a programmable logic controller (PLC) and accelerometer, and the critical speeds of the roll assembly are nulllearnednull by the PLC which triggers changes to the pressure of the pressure applying member of the assembly to alter the roll's stiffness and the critical speeds.

A roll for use in the manufacture of paper and board, a press roll, in particular a center roll in a press, a backup roll for an extended-nip press roll, a hot press roll, or equivalent, which is in direct contact with a wet paper web, or a calender roll, a method for manufacturing the same and a coating composition therefor including an adhesion layer arranged on the frame part of the roll and a ceramic layer arranged on the adhesion layer. The ceramic layer has a thickness of from about 100 nullm to about 2000 nullm and includes from about 50% to about 95% by weight of Cr2O3 and from about 3% to about 50% by weight of TiO2, or from about 50% to about 80% by weight of Al2O3 and from about 20% to about 50% by weight of ZrO2, or exclusively Al2TiO5. The outer face of the ceramic layer is finished until the roughness Ra is from about 0.2 nullm to about 2.0 nullm and/or the porosity of the outer face of the roll is from about 1% to about 20%. In addition to or instead of TiO2, the ceramic layer may contain oxides of aluminum, silicon, zirconium, magnesium, manganese, tin, tungsten and mixtures thereof.
