Abstract:
Described herein is a process for separating an acid impurity from a solution containing acid and a nitro substituted aromatic compound by contacting the solution with at least one molten nitrate salt.
Abstract:
In adsorption and chromatography proceseses for the separation of at least one substance from a mixture of substances, silicon carbide is used as the adsorbent and as a support material in such processes.
Abstract:
Disclosed is a method of making 1,1'-oxybis (3-nitro-5-trifluoromethyl)-benzene by heating a nitro benzofluoride compound having the formula ##STR1## where "X" is selected from the group consisting of NO.sub.2, Cl, and F, with an alkali metal fluoride selected from the group consisting of potassium fluoride, cesium fluoride, and mixtures thereof, in an organic solvent in the presence of water. The corresponding diamine, 5,5'-oxybis (3-trifluoromethyl)-benzamine, can be prepared by reducing the benzene compound.
Abstract:
A process is provided for removing impurities from the gaseous product of an alkyl nitrite production zone by contacting a portion of it with lower alcohol and oxygen to convert substantially all of the nitric oxide in that portion of the gaseous product stream to alkyl nitrite, the oxygen being present in an amount such that the mole ratio of nitric oxide to oxygen is in the range of about 4:1 to about 2:1 and the lower alcohol being present in the reaction zone such that the mole ratio of nitric oxide to lower alcohol is about 1:1 or less. A recovery stream, comprising alkyl nitrite substantially free of nitric oxide, is withdrawn from the reaction zone and at least a portion of the alkyl produced in the reaction zone is removed. A least a portion of the balance of the recovery stream from which the alkyl nitrite has been removed is purged, thereby removing impurities from the process.
Abstract:
A crude 3,3'-dinitrodiphenyl compound selected from 3,3'-dinitrodiphenylsulfone or 3,3'-dinitrobenzophenone is purified by reacting the crude 3,3'-dinitrodiphenyl compound with a lower alcohol in the presence of a base so as to convert practically the isomer or isomers, which contain one or more nitro groups at the ortho- or/and para-positions, only into the corresponding alkoxy compound or compounds thereof and then separating the alkoxy compound or compounds.
Abstract:
An adsorptive separation process for separating ortho-nitrotoluene from a feed mixture comprising the ortho-isomer and at least one other isomer of nitrotoluene. The process comprises contacting the feed mixture with an adsorbent comprising a type X zeolite, containing at the exchangeable cationic sites cations of metals from Group IA or IIA of the Periodic Table of Elements, selectively adsorbing substantially all of the ortho-nitrotoluene to the substantial exclusion of the remaining isomers, removing the non-adsorbed portion of the feed mixture from contact with the adsorbent, and thereafter recovering high-purity ortho-isomer by desorption with nitrobenzene.
Abstract:
The production of 2,2',4,4',6,6'-hexanitrostilbene-II (HNS-II) having fin divided particles of uniform size by dissolving HNS-II in hot dimethylsulfoxide and then injecting the hot solution through a small orifice into methanol at a temperature of from -50.degree. C. to -80.degree. C.
Abstract:
This invention relates to a process for removing trinitrocresols and picric acid contaminants from a wastewater stream generated in the production of nitroaromatics, particularly dinitrotoluene, by the mixed acid technique. The process involves contacting the crude dinitrotoluene generated by the mixed acid technique with an alkaline medium to generate an alkaline wash water containing water soluble nitrocresols and picric acid therein. This wastewater then, is separated from the organic component or may be recycled for contact with further quantities of crude dinitrotoluene product from the reactor. When the concentration of the water soluble salts of trinitrocresols and picric acid is of sufficient concentration, the wash water is treated with aqueous acid in sufficient proportion to reduce the pH to a level from 3-4. After pH adjustment, the medium is contacted with hydrogen peroxide and a ferrous ion under conditions to effect oxidation of a substantial portion of the trinitrocresol to carboxylic acid, nitric acid and carbon dioxide.
Abstract:
A means for decomposing undesirable by-products formed during the nitration by nitric acid only of N--C.sub.1 to C.sub.8 alkyl phthalimides which comprises elevating the temperature of the reaction mix during or following nitration and an improved nitration process incorporating said means.
Abstract:
A process for selectively forming nitro compounds by contacting, at elevated temperature and pressure and in a homogeneous gas phase, an aldehyde having from two to ten carbon atoms with nitrogen dioxide alone or in the presence of oxygen and/or water.
