Abstract: A ship of simplified construction for the marine transportation of liquefied gases at cryogenic temperatures is equipped with at least one concrete tank. In a first embodiment, the concrete tank is surrounded by a layer of sand. A second embodiment contemplates both a layer of sand surrounding the concrete tank and a further layer of insulating material within the tank. In a third embodiment, a layer of insulating material is provided within the concrete tank. A fourth embodiment of the invention relates to a concrete tank surrounded by a layer of insulating material which abuts the hull of the ship. And in a fifth embodiment of the invention, the entire hull of the ship is concrete and forms at least one containment tank. In the fifth embodiment, there may be provided a layer of insulating material within each tank.

A storage container (e.g. for liquefied gas) comprises an inner vessel and an outer vessel each comprising a wall 28, 14 and a roof 30, 16, the spaces between the walls and between the roofs containing thermal insulation (e.g. perlite 46, 64 and may be resilient layers 40, 42 of matted glass fibre) the roof 30 being supported (e.g. by ties 52) from support points on the outer surface of the roof 16. Various means of anchoring the tie rods 52 on the roof 16 are shown; all involve welding. The invention of the applicants' co-pending Specification 1,214,121 is also disclosed. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 840,952.

[Also in Division F4] Heat insulation material 16, 17, 20, 21, Fig. 3, surrounding a cold liquidized gas storage tank 15 of polygonal form, Fig. 2, has embedded therein near the outer surface a film of water impermeable material 19 extending parallel to the tank sides whereby any water or water vapour which penetrates the outer thickness 20 of the insulation which is permeable runs down the film 19 and is collected in a recess 13a in an outer tank 13, e.g. the inner hull of a tanker. The insulation comprises a thick layer 17 of balsa wood mounted on spaced water impermeable wood strips 16 attached to the inner hull 13, a layer of permeable fibreglass 20 between adjacent strips 16 and impermeable fibreglass 21 between layer 17 and the film 19. The latter may be of metal or plastics material and is adhesively secured to the strips 16, which are provided with drain holes 16a. In a modification the storage tank is of the self-supporting type and the insulation which is spaced therefrom comprises a thick inner layer of balsa wood and a thin outer layer of fibreglass between which layers the water impermeable film is sandwiched; provision being made for collecting water running down the outer surface of the film and also for collecting leakage from the tank as described in Specification 919,755.

Each vessel having a vertical side wall 28, 14 and a roof 30, 16, the space between the side walls containing a resilient layer 40, 42 in contact with each sidewall, and the space 46 between being filled with a thermal insulation (e.g. penlite, expanded vermiculite, granulated cork, foamed polystyrene, shredded wood, fiber-glass waste, or mineral wool). The layers 40, 42 may comprise sheets of matted glassfibres, of diameter less than 0À00015 inches bonded by a thin film of phenol-formaldehyde resin binder, to form a blanket having a density of approximately 2 lb./cu. ft. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 840,952.

The flat bottom 1 of a liquefied gas storage container is supported on a layer of granular heat insulating material 3, e.g. gravel, which extends outwardly beyond the periphery of the base and which is protected from ambient moisture by a layer 7 of asphalt. The roof and vertical cylindrical wall 2 of the container is lagged with heat insulation material 8 wrapped with an impervious cover 8a. The gravel 3 and asphalt 7 are retained within a steel tray 4 provided with a steam-heated tube 6. In a modification, the tray is of concrete supported by piles or by a continuous slab of concrete. The cylinder wall 2 has a plurality of peripherally spaced brackets (11), Fig. 3 (not shown), each engaged by a holding-down bolt (13) extending downwardly through a sleeve (14) in gravel layer 3 and pivoted to anchor bolts (15).

[Also in Division F4] In a liquefied gas tanker comprising a hull 12 having a cargo section, a load carrying deck 15 in the cargo section, a plurality of doublewalled, generally rectangular, liquefied gas storage tanks 14 free standing on the deck and extending above the cargo section, a metal weather shield 19 extends over the top of each tank and downwardly for part of the height, a downwardly and outwardly directed flashing 22 being provided on the weather shield, and a flexible seal 28 extends between the flashing and the hull. The seal prevents entry of water between a tank and the hull whilst permitting relative movement due to expansion and contraction of the tank. In the embodiment shown an upstanding flange 26 lies inboard of the flashing and the flexible seal is located between them.
