Abstract:
An immunogenic composition comprising a siderophore covalently linked to a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier molecule wherein the antigenicity of the siderophore moiety is sufficient to stimulate an immunologic response to the siderophore when the composition is circulating in the bloodstream of a human or non-human animal and vaccine.
Abstract:
Olefin metathesis between an acrylate monomer and a polyene comprising molecule or polymer is employed as a method of cross-metathesizing or depolymerizing the molecule. The metathesis reaction forms a telechelic acrylate molecule that is a monomer, oligomer or polymer. The telechelic acrylate molecule can be employed as a monomer for condensation polymerization.
Abstract:
Described herein are methods of preventing, arresting progression of or ameliorating vision loss and other conditions associated with retinitis pigmentosa and x-linked retinitis pigmentosa in a subject. The methods include administering to said subject an effective concentration of a composition comprising a recombinant adeno-associated virus (AAV) carrying a nucleic acid sequence encoding a normal retinitis pigmentosa GTPase regulator (RPGR gene), or fragment thereof, under the control of regulatory sequences which express the product of the gene in the photoreceptor cells of the subject, and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier.
Abstract:
A biorenewable thermoplastic, poly(dihydroferulic acid) (PHFA), is an effective polyethylene terephthalate (PET) mimic that is prepared by a step-growth condensation polymerization of acetyldihydroferulic acid. Other biorenewable thermoplastic copolymers, poly(dihydroferulic acid-co-ferulic acid) are effective mimics of polystyrene and other thermoplastics. The PHFA copolymers can be prepared by the copolymerization of acetyldihydroferulic acid with acetylferulic acid, which are monomers that can be synthesized from starting materials isolated from lignin, rice bran, or other biorenewable sources.
Abstract:
An assay system designed to detect a protein biomarker in urine that is diagnostic for interstitial cystitis (IC). The presence of a 9 amino acid glycopeptide, antiproliferative factor (APF), in urine is unique to patients with IC. Urine samples from patients who exhibit symptoms consistent with IC are added to the assay system. Binding of APF to the cytoskeletal associated protein 4 (CKAP4) is positive for the presence of APF in urine and diagnostic for IC. The diagnostic system is a significant and surprising advance in diagnosis of IC and has commercial applications relevant to women and men who suffer from symptoms consistent with IC.
Abstract:
The present invention provides methods to produce a reduced representation of a genome for sequencing and DNA polymorphism detection. In particular, the invention provides PCR-based methods, with normalization of the amplified products using a duplex-specific nuclease, in order to reduce over-representation of PCR products. Oligonucleotides for use in the disclosed method are also provided.
Abstract:
Hollow conjugated polyelectrolyte (HCPE) microcapsules contain at least one conjugated polyelectrolyte and at least one other polyelectrolyte of complementary charge and the microcapsule has a hollow core. The conjugated polyelectrolyte is a polymer with a multiplicity of charged repeating units where a portion of the charged repeating units form a pi-conjugated sequence. The complementary polyelectrolyte is a polymer with a complementary charged repeating unit to the charged repeating units of the conjugated polyelectrolyte. The HCPE microcapsules can be formed by successively coating a sacrificial core with alternating layers of complementary polyelectrolytes, at least one of which is a conjugated polyelectrolyte. The sacrificial core can be removed to form the hollow center of a HCPE microcapsule. The HCPE microcapsules can be contacted with a medium containing microbes where the HCPE microcapsules associate with the microbes and efficiently kill the microbes when irradiated with light or other electromagnetic radiation.
Abstract:
Nanoengineered particulate coatings (NPCs) comprise a multiplicity of particulate hosts that are infused with a nanophase comprising a surfactant and at least one guest. The particulate hosts can be clay particles, the surfactant can be a cationic surfactant, and the guest can be an insect repellant. For example, montmorillonite particles infused with hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide and garlic oil form NPCs that may be used to form an emulsion or suspension for spraying on citrus trees to repel Asian Citrus Psyllid.
Abstract:
Systems and methods to develop a vascular model of vascular trees that are captured with 3-Dimensional medical imaging data of a subject. Image processing iteratively traverses vessel image segments within the imaging data and creates a vessel model defined within a data structure that defines branch segments and bifurcation points where those branch segments split. The model generation algorithms incorporate strategies and parameters to identify and repair falsely identified bifurcations that reflect false inter-tree and intra-tree connections that can appear when processing images with complicated vessel trees. Accurate traversal of the vessel tree as portrayed in 3-Dimensional medical images is emphasized to correctly label branch generations and identify and repair erroneous interconnections between adjacent trees.
Abstract:
Embodiments of the subject invention are drawn to power supply units and systems for supplying power to loads. Specific embodiments relate to systems incorporating the loads. The power supply units and systems can include a feedback mechanism for monitoring the system and maintaining a parameter of interest at or near a desired value (e.g., for maintaining the frequency of operation at or near resonance). The feedback mechanism is configured such that, if the at least one parameter indicates that the frequency of operation is away from a resonant frequency of the power amplifier, the feedback mechanism adjusts the frequency of operation closer to the resonant frequency of the power amplifier. The at least one load can have a variable impedance, though embodiments are not limited thereto.
