    Abstract: In an image display apparatus including a multi-electron beam source having a plurality of electron-emitting devices (51) wired in a matrix using a plurality of column wiring layers and a plurality of row wiring layers, and a plurality of phosphors which are excited to emit light upon irradiation of electron beams, a delta arrangement of phosphors is realized with the simple arrangement of the multi-electron beam source. The column and row wiring layers are straight layers, the plurality of phosphors (R, G, and B) are arranged in a delta arrangement, and the multi-electron beam source is adjusted such that a plurality of electron beams emitted therefrom reach the phosphors. For this reason, the directions of electrons emitted from the devices on an odd ((2p-1)th) row and an even (2pth) row along orbits are reversed.

    Abstract: In an image display apparatus which has a multi-electron beam source in which a plurality of electron emission elements are connected in a matrix pattern using a plurality of data electrodes and a plurality of scanning electrodes, and a fluorescent screen having phosphors of three primary colors R, G, and B corresponding to the electron emission elements, natural white color emission is obtained while suppressing a decrease in G luminance, using, e.g., a checkerboard layout which has a G spatial resolution higher than the R or B spatial resolution and includes more G phosphors than the R or B phosphors. For this purpose, the scanning electrodes connected to the electron emission elements corresponding to the G phosphors are electrically independent from those connected to the electron emission elements corresponding to the R or B phosphors, signal components corresponding to the G phosphors and signal components corresponding to the R or B phosphors are extracted from an image signal for a 1-line period, and the scanning electrode connected to the electron emission elements corresponding to the G phosphors and those connected to the electron emission elements corresponding to the R or B phosphors are selected during successively the 1-line period.

    Abstract: A matrix addressable flat panel display includes a flat cathode operable for emitting electrons to an anode when an electric field is produced across the surface of the flat cathode by two electrodes placed on each side of the flat cathode. The flat cathode may consist of a cermet or amorphic diamond or some other combination of a conducting material and an insulating material such as a low effective work function material. The electric field produced causes electrons to hop on the surface of the cathode at the conducting-insulating interfaces. An electric field produced between the anode and the cathode causes these electrons to bombard a phosphor layer on the anode.
