Abstract: A process is described for producing 1,3-butanediol, wherein an ester of poly-(R)-3-hydroxybutyrate such as formed by transesterification with an alcohol is reduced by hydrogenation in the presence of a skeletal copper-based catalyst to provide 1,3-butanediol. The 1,3-butanediol may be transesterified by reaction with additional poly-(R)-3-hydroxybutyrate ester to produce (R)-3-hydroxybutyl (R)-3-hydroxybutyrate.

Abstract: A process is provided for making isoidide, wherein a dextrose feed is first converted by a combination of epimerization and hydrogenation to an iditol-enriched mixture of hexitols in the presence of hydrogen and in the further presence of a single, dual purpose catalyst, and the iditol is then conventionally fully dehydrated to provide isoidide. In one general embodiment, the dehydration is performed on the iditol-enriched mixture of hexitols to provide an isohexides product mixture including isoidide, and the isoidide is recovered therefrom. In another general embodiment, iditol is separated from the iditol-enriched mixture of hexitols, and at least a portion of this iditol is then dehydrated to provide an isoidide product.

Abstract: Copper-containing, multimetallic catalysts with either a zirconia or carbon support are described which have improved utility for the hydrogenolysis of a glycerol or glycerol-containing feedstock to provide a biobased 1,2-propanediol product. specially, improved carbon-supported examples of such catalysts are described for this reaction as well as for other processes wherein hydrogen is used, with methods for maintaining the activity of these catalysts. Related treatment methods in the preparation of these improved catalysts enable the use of carbons with a desired mechanical strength but which previously lacked activity, for example, for the conversion of a glycerol or glycerol-containing feed to produce 1,2-propanediol, so that copper-containing, multi-metallic catalysts may be employed for making a biobased propylene glycol using carbon supports that previously would have not been suitable.

Abstract: The present invention relates generally to processes for converting fructose-containing feedstocks to a product comprising 5-(hydroxymethyl)furfural (HMF) and water in the presence of water, solvent and an acid catalyst. In some embodiments, the conversion of fructose to HMF is controlled at a partial conversion endpoint characterized by a yield of HMF from fructose that does not exceed about 80 mol %. In these and other embodiments, the processes provide separation techniques for separating and recovering the product, unconverted fructose, solvent and acid catalyst to enable the effective recovery and reutilization of reaction components.

In certain embodiments, methyl-tert-butyl ether prepared by reacting the same biobased isobutene with methanol serves as a formaldehyde source, being oxidatively cracked to produce formaldehyde as well as isobutene for being converted to the biobased isoprene.

Abstract: Described herein is an ethoxylated starch crosslinked with a cross linking agent having surprisingly high viscosity in water. The ethoxylated crosslinked starch described has a degree of ethoxy substitution from 1% to 3% and the crosslinking agent is from 0.02% to 0.05% of the weight of starch. Within this narrow range of values, a 7% wt/wt aqueous solution of the crosslinked ethoxylated starch exhibits a viscosity of at least 1600 cps at 95 ° C. This ethoxylated crosslinked starch is particularly useful in the formation of ceiling tiles with stucco, borax and steel wool, and should be useful in enhancing the viscosity of hydraulic fracturing fluids.
