Methods of synthesizing and purifying ethers are described. The synthesis and purification are achieved using an etherification technique followed by one or two fractional distillations. The etherification utilizes an element having low work function properties. Examples of low work function elements include, but are not limited to, metals or their hydrides, such as sodium, lithium or potassium or some combination thereof. This technique yields ethers of greater than 90% purity.

Partially fluorinated ketones are provided that include a terminal alkyl group having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms bonded to a carbonyl group and a hydrofluoroether moiety having from 2 to 4 carbon atoms that contains at least one hydrogen substituent. The hydrofluoroether moiety is bonded to the carbonyl group with a carbon-carbon bond. The ether oxygen is bonded to a carbon atom that is at least two carbon atoms removed from the carbonyl group. Additionally, a fluorinated alkyl group having from 1 to 10 carbon atoms is bonded to the ether oxygen of the hydrofluoroether moiety. These partially fluorinated ketones can be used in a wide variety of electronics applications.

The reactions are suitable for use in continuous flow reactors. Methods of carrying out the conversions are provided, as are product and catalyst compositions.

These esters of citric acid can be formed from renewable materials and can be used, for example, as plasticizers for various polymeric materials. The tetrahydrofurfuryl and/or alkyl-substituted tetrahydrofurfuryl esters of citric acid typically have a low odor, have good compatibility with a variety of polymeric materials, and can be used at temperatures often encountered during hot melt processing of polymeric materials.

The present invention relates to a process for preparing 1,1-disubstituted ethylene monomers having general formula (I) from a compound of general formula (II) and an active methylene compound of general formula (III) using a catalytic amount of an ammonium or iminium a salt in homogeneous phase or supported on a solid substrate. Said process allows the direct synthesis of the monomers and finds application in the preparation of a wide variety of monomers. The products obtained are reactive monomers of high purity which find application in the field of fast curing adhesives.

Dicarbamates of the reduction products of 2-hydroxymethyl-5-furfural (HMF) and a method of preparing the same are described. The method involves reacting a mixture of an isohexide and a cynate salt in a non-aqueous solvent, with a miscible acid having a pKa of about 3.7 or less. The dicarbamates of HMF-reduction products can serve as precursor materials from which various derivative compounds can be synthesized.
