The MPEG-4 Multiview Video Coding (MVC) standard provides the coding tools to compress images from more than one view. Traditionally, the base view of the multiple view images has to be coded by the MPEG-4 Advance Video Coding (AVC) standard. However, in some deployments, for compatibility to legacy players, MPEG-2 Video standard has to be used for the coding of the based view. This invention provides methods and apparatuses to compute the parameters required by the MVC encoder and decoder without signalling such information in the base view that is coded by the MPEG-2 video standard.

A video coding apparatus includes: a mode determination unit which determines a notification method for notifying a transform block size to be used in orthogonal transform of a current block to be either the implicit mode or the explicit mode, and outputs the ABT mode indicating the determined notification method; an orthogonal transformation unit which transforms the difference values between the input image and predicted image into frequency coefficients based on the transform block size determined in accordance with the determined notification method; a quantization unit which quantizes the frequency coefficients and output the quantized values; and a variable length coding unit which performs variable length coding on the quantized values, the ABT mode, and the like, so as to output a coded stream.

The method includes: writing one of a parameter or a flag into one or more reference pictures of the plurality of reference pictures, creating a first list of reference pictures comprising the plurality of reference pictures sorted based on the parameter or flag, and encoding a current picture of the video using at least the first list of reference pictures. A method of decoding video using a plurality of reference pictures is also provided. The method includes parsing one of a parameter or flag from one or more reference pictures of the plurality of reference pictures, creating a first list of reference pictures comprising the plurality of reference pictures sorted based on the parameter or flag, and decoding a current picture of the video using at least the first list of reference pictures. In addition, there are provided corresponding apparatuses for encoding and decoding video.
