    Abstract: A feeder for orienting and aligning disorderly incoming items includes a rotatable table having a peripheral wall and a discharge opening in the peripheral wall, the discharge opening allowing the items in a predetermined orientation to be successively withdrawn from the rotatable table in a single file line, the rotatable table being fed with disorderly items; a first carrier disposed proximate to the discharge opening, the first carrier recovering the oriented items exiting through the discharge opening; and an item spacer mounted proximate to the first carrier, the item spacer providing a predetermined spacing between two consecutive oriented items. It also relates to a method for doing same.

    Abstract: Mass spectrometric techniques are provided for detecting the presence of parasites that accumulate unbound heme in red blood cells (including malaria parasites), based on the discovery that unbound heme can be detected and quantified using mass spectrometry. In one aspect of the invention, the method includes the steps of: obtaining a blood sample from the animal; preparing a test sample on a support from the blood sample, and inserting the support into a mass spectrometer for analysis. Next one obtains a mass spectrum of the test sample and determines whether the mass spectrum contains a mass/charge signature of unbound heme. If it is determined that the mass spectrum of the test sample shows the mass/charge signature of unbound heme, the animal is diagnosed as infected with malaria parasites.

    Abstract: A louver assembly and a method for installing the louver assembly into an opening in a wall of a structure are provided wherein the louver includes a frame which and a separate louver section which may be mounted within the frame after the frame has been mounted in the opening in the wall. The frame defines a central channel which extends from an interior opening to an exterior opening. The frame includes a frame flange extending from an exterior edge of the central channel so that, when the frame is in a desired position within the hole in the wall, the frame flange extends around the entire perimeter of the hole to seal the perimeter of the hole. The louver section is selectively mountable within the central channel so that it is prevented from passing through the exterior opening. When the louver section is in a desired position within the central channel, the frame is sealed so that air is prevented from passing between the frame and an outer surface of the louver section.

    Abstract: This invention is for a support for a silver-containing catalyst which can be used in a method of making an alkene oxide from an alkene and an oxygen-containing gas by oxidation of the alkene to the corresponding epoxide, such as propylene to propylene oxide. The support is an alkaline earth metal carbonate, such as calcium carbonate, and the shape of the support is not regular rhombohedral, cubic nor a blend of regular rhombohedral and cubic. Preferably, the shape of the support is scalenohedral, irregular rhombohedral, acicular or prismatic.     Abstract: This invention is for a method of preparing a supported silver-containing catalyst for use in a process of making an alkene oxide from an alkene and an oxygen-containing gas by oxidation of the alkene to the corresponding epoxide. The catalyst contains metallic silver on a support. The catalyst may also contain small amount of compounds of metals or halides as promoters to improve selectivity, activity, conversion, stability or yield. The catalyst is prepared by forming a slurry of a silver compound, water and one or more organic compounds having at least one functional group of the formula —NX2, —OX or [(═O) (—OX)] wherein X is hydrogen or an alkyl of one to three carbon atoms, X being the same or different, and wherein at least one functional group is bound to a terminal carbon. This slurry is formed before contact with the support material to deposit silver on the support.
