Current output pictures of video data are generated utilizing a motion compensated (MC) blended picture and a corresponding non-MC blended picture of the video data. Windows of picture data from a first picture and MC windows of picture data from a MC previously output picture may be partitioned. The partitioned widows are compared and the first picture is blended with the MC previously output picture based on the comparison to, for example, reduce noise and prevent motion trail artifacts. Non-MC windows of picture data from a MC or non-MC previously output picture may be partitioned and compared with the windows of picture data from the first picture. The first picture may be blended with the MC or non-MC previously output picture based on the comparison to reduce motion trail artifacts. A blending factor is determined and utilized to blend the blended pictures to reduce noise and prevent motion artifacts.

The hardware accelerators are configurable to support a plurality of existing and future encoding/decoding formats. The accelerators are configurable to support substantially any existing or future encoding/decoding formats that fall into the general class of DCT-based, entropy decoded, block-motion-compensated compression algorithms. The hardware accelerators illustratively comprise a programmable entropy decoder, an inverse quantization module, a inverse discrete cosine transform module, a pixel filter, a motion compensation module and a de-blocking filter. The hardware accelerators function in a decoding pipeline wherein at any given stage in the pipeline, while a given function is being performed on a given macroblock, the next macroblock in the data stream is being worked on by the previous function in the pipeline.

A video or graphics scaler may be utilized to scale luma, chroma, and/or alpha information in a video image. The scaler may comprise a first symmetric polyphase sub-filter with zero phase shift that generates an in-phase filtered pixel and a second symmetric polyphase sub-filter that generates an out-of-phase filtered pixel. The video scaler may also comprise an interpolator that may generate a scaled video image pixel based on the generated in-phase and out-of-phase filtered pixels and a scaling factor. The scaling factor may be determined based on an input video size (M) and a desired output video size (N). The interpolation of the generated in-phase and out-of-phase pixels in the video scaler may be implemented by utilizing a Farrow structure.

A video and graphics system provides square graphics pixels to blend images having 640×480 pixels, such as graphics images provided by some set top boxes and intended to be displayed at a 12.27 MHz display sample rate, with images having 704×480 pixels, such as ITU-R 601 compliant images such as NTSC SDTV images, having oblong pixels and displayed at a 13.5 MHz display sample rate. A sample rate converter including a multi-phase-multi-tap filter is used to generate square pixels. The multi-phase-multi-tap filter provides a good balance of sharpness, smoothness, anti-aliasing and reduced ringing. The multi-phase-multi-tap filter can also be used to convert images having 320×480 pixels to images having 704×480 pixels. The multi-tap filter can be used for scan rate conversion of graphics or video images for HDTV or SDTV applications.

The system utilizes de-interlacing techniques to convert input interlaced format video to progressive format video, and compress and vertically scale the progressive format video to communicate videos more efficiently in a progressive format. The system also supports interlaced and progressive displays, where after decompressing and vertically resealing the communicated compressed progressive format video, the video may be converted to interlaced format if the display supports interlaced format video. The system is capable of dynamically switching between the progressive and the interlaced format modes.
