Disclosed are portable, disposable, centimeter-scale, integrated diagnostics incubators for use in biological culturing. An exemplary incubator comprises an optically accessible enclosure having a plurality of fluidic ports. A heating element is disposed within the enclosure that is coupled to an external heater controller. An autoclavable microfluidic perfusion chamber is disposed within the enclosure that comprises a cell culture life support chamber, an inlet port disposed in the perfusion chamber, a collection chamber in communication with the culture chamber, an outlet port coupled to the collection pool, and a perfusing substrate. An optically transparent, gas permeable membrane is attachable to the top of the perfusion chamber. The incubators have optical accessibility, forced flow fluidic control, temperature control, are portable and modular, and are inexpensively manufactured. The incubators permit in-the-field drug testing and culturing of biological tissues.

Systems and methods for modifying fluid flowing over solid bodies are provided. A representative system incorporates a vorticity concentration-producing component and a synthetic jet actuator. The vorticity concentration-producing component is disposed on a pressure side of the solid body. The fluid flowing over the solid body remains attached to a surface of the solid body in a vicinity of the vorticity concentration-producing component. The synthetic jet actuator includes a jet housing that incorporates an internal chamber with a volume of fluid and an opening in the jet housing connecting the internal chamber to an external environment having the fluid. The synthetic jet actuator is operative to periodically change the volume within the internal chamber such that a synthetic jet stream comprising a series of fluid vortices is generated and projected in the external environment out from the opening of the jet housing resulting in a reduction in pressure drag of the solid body compared to the pressure drag exhibited by the solid body without operation of the synthetic jet actuator.

Briefly described, the present invention is concerned with cooling heated bodies and/or heated fluid with synthetic jet actuators in either open or closed systems. A first preferred embodiment of a cooling system of the present invention comprises a synthetic jet actuator directed to impinge directly on a heat producing (or heated) body. The synthetic jet actuator generates a synthetic jet stream comprised of cool ambient fluid that impinges on the heated surface thereby cooling this surface. As an example, the heated surface/body could be a microchip array in a microcomputer. After coming into contact with the heated surface, the fluid moves along the surface and is finally rejected to the ambient where it mixes and cools down. The synthetic jet may be incorporated into a modular unit that may be clipped on to a circuit board or other heat producing element to provide added, `ad hoc` cooling. In another configuration, a synthetic jet actuator may be positioned, relative to the heated surface, to create a synthetic jet stream to flow along the heated surface. In this embodiment, the flow would be approximately tangential to a surface of a heat producing body. This embodiment may further comprise a cyclical flow of the fluid jet, along the heated body and about a heat sink surface.

A locking mechanism for use in a door and the like. A remote handheld controller transmits coded signals to an electronic door lock. A sensor/receiver receives the signals and provides the signal to a processor which compares the coded signals against a predetermined stored signal. If the received coded signal matches the predetermined signal, then the processor generates control signals to actuate an electromechanical device, which acts solely along or about the locking axis, to enable or disable the locking latch. The user is then able to turn the door handle in a normal manner. The coded signals are comprised of two separate signals which are transmitted in segments interleaved with one another. The first signal includes an entrance code, while the second signal provides information concerning the frequency over which the next segments will be transmitted. The processor uses the second signal information to tune the receiver.

The present invention involves a system for altering the aerodynamic shape and/or fluid flow field about a solid body. The preferred embodiment comprises a synthetic jet actuator embedded in a solid body, with the jet orifice built into the body surface. The synthetic jet actuator generates a series of fluid vortices emanating from the orifice so as to entrain fluid external to the actuator chamber and form a synthetic jet stream. A recirculating flow region is formed along the solid body surface about the synthetic jet orifice. As a result the apparent aerodynamic shape of the body is altered. Consequently, if the solid body is placed in a fluid flow field, the entire fluid flow field is altered by the operation of the synthetic jet actuator.
