摘要: A traveling wave droplet generator having a drop-on-demand mode of operation. An acoustic mechanism excites a line of peaks of ink just below threshold for ink drop ejection in the orifices of an ink chamber. Electrostatic means raises particular peaks above the threshold using an excitation that is synchronous with the acoustic wave, which gives rise to parametric coupling which enhances the efficiency of the ejection. The electrostatic field can be selectively established at each of the orifices by a conventional addressing mechanism.

摘要: A nitride cantilever is formed with an integral conical silicon tip at the free end thereof. A top layer of silicon dioxide is patterned into a tip mask on a doped or epitaxial silicon layer in a silicon substrate. Photoresist is spun on the silicon substrate and patterned and the silicon is etched to define a cantilever pattern in the substrate with the tip mask positioned to be near the free end of a nitride cantilever to be subsequently formed. A bottom layer of silicon dioxide is formed on the silicon substrate and then patterned and etched to define a masking aperture on the bottom silicon dioxide layer. The bottom of the silicon substrate is anisotropically etched through the masking aperture and the etch stops at the doped silicon layer. Alternatively, electrochemical etching is done by applying an electric potential across the P-N junction between the doped silicon layer and the appropriately-doped substrate. This releases the free end of the doped silicon layer from the silicon substrate. The anisotropic etch preferentially etches all of the crystal planes of the silicon substrate except the (111) planes to leave a silicon base from which extends the silicon surface layer as a cantilever. A nitride layer is then formed on the silicon substrate and dry etched from the top surface of the doped silicon surface layer to form a nitride cantilever on the bottom of the silicon substrate. The doped silicon layer is etched away while the tip mask helps to form a pointed silicon tip near the free end of the nitride cantilever.A microfabricated cantilever includes a (100) silicon base having a (111) oblique side. A nitride layer is formed over the (111) oblique side of the silicon base and extends outwardly from the top surface of the silicon base to form a nitride cantilever having one end fixed to the silicon base and having a free end. On the free end is fixed a single-crystal sharp conical silicon tip which extends upwardly.

摘要: To facilitate the use of hot melt inks in acoustic ink printers of the type having a printhead including one or more acoustic droplet ejectors for supplying focused acoustic beams, such a printer comprises a carrier for transporting a generally uniformly thick film of hot melt ink across its printhead, together with a heating means for liquefying the ink as it nears the printhead. The droplet ejector or ejectors are acoustically coupled to the ink via the carrier, and their output focal plane is essentially coplanar with the free surface of the liquefied ink, thereby enabling them to eject individual droplets of ink therefrom on command. The ink, on the other hand, is moved across the printhead at a sufficiently high rate to maintain the free surface which it presents to the printhead at a substantially constant level. A variety of carriers may be employed, including thin plastic and metallic belts and webs, and the free surface of the ink may be completely exposed or it may be partially covered by a mesh or perforated layer. A separate heating element may be provided for liquefying the ink, or the lower surface of the carrier may be coated with a thin layer of electrically resistive material for liquefying the ink by localized resistive heating.

摘要: Method and apparatus for causing light to interact with surface acoustic waves so that the light is either scattered out of or coupled into an optical wave guide. In the case of scattering when the light is propagating in an optical wave guide and chirped surface acoustic waves interact with the light, the light is scattered out of the optical wave guide into a focused beam. The focused beam of light travels in a path parallel to the surface acoustic waves and at the same velocity as the acoustic waves. The focused beam can scan objects to obtain electrical signals corresponding to the optical image of the objects and also the beam can be focused on a plurality of photodetectors to multiplex the light. In the case of coupling when the light is incident on an optical wave guide and the frequency of the chirped surface acoustic waves is selectively varied, the light is selectively coupled into the optical wave guide in a corresponding manner. The selective coupling of the light permits the frequency spectrum and the angular distribution of the light to be analyzed.

摘要: An improved electronically focused imaging system for focusing transmitted acoustic waves into a focal line and for scanning the focal line for waves either reflected or transmitted from an object of interest. The system includes N transducer elements in a transmitter array and N transducer elements in a receiver array. These 2N elements can resolve N.sup.2 locations on the object of interest. In one embodiment the transmitter array is pulsed through a delay line that is activated by two, independent, frequency varying chirp signals. In this embodiment the receiver array is focused to scan the focal line and to develop a rectangular raster so that the output of the system is viewable on an oscilloscope or a television screen. In another embodiment the transmitter array is pulsed by a delay line activated by one chirp signal and a 45.degree. raster is developed.

摘要: The present invention provides an apparatus and method for nucleotide or DNA sequencing by monitoring the molecular charge configuration as the DNA moves through a protein that is capable of transcribing the DNA. The apparatus and method provides a nanoscale electrometer that immobilizes the protein. The protein receives the DNA and transcribes the DNA. The nanoscale electrometer is a sensitive device that is capable of sensing and measuring the electronic charge that is released during the transcription process. The apparatus and method of the present invention further provides monitoring means that are attached to the nanoscale electrometer to monitor the electronic charge configuration as the DNA moves through the protein. Once the electronic charge configuration is established, a correlation is computed, using computing means, between the electronic charge configuration and a nucleotide signature of the DNA.

摘要: The present invention includes several nanotube structures which can be made using catalyst islands disposed on a substrate (e.g. silicon, alumina, or quartz) or on the free end of an atomic force microscope cantilever. The catalyst islands are capable of catalyzing the growth of carbon nanotubes from carbon containing gases (e.g. methane). The present invention includes an island of catalyst material (such as Fe2O3) disposed on the substrate with a carbon nanotube extending from the island. Also included in the present invention is a pair of islands with a nanotube extending between the islands, electrically connecting them. Conductive metal lines connected to the islands (which may be a few microns on a side) allows for external circuitry to connect to the nanotube. Such a structure can be used in many different electronic and microelectromechanical devices. For example, a nanotube connected between two islands can function as a resonator if the substrate beneath the nanotube is etched away. Also, the present invention includes a catalyst particle disposed on the free end of an AFM cantilever and having a nanotube extending from the particle. The nanotube can be used as the scanning tip of the AFM as is know in the art.

摘要: An acoustic lens array fabrication process includes the formation of a microlens array mold stamper through the melting of a photoresist resin deposited on formed pedestals of a substrate. Heating of the resin causes formation of semi-spherical photoresist mounds. A further processing step, such as reactive ion etching, is used to transfer the geometry of the photoresist mounds to the substrate material, thereby forming a microlens mold stamper with convex mounds. The microlens mold stamper is then pressed into an upper surface of a acoustic ink print head substrate heated to a predetermined temperature, allowing the convex mounds to form concave impressions in the acoustic ink print head substrate, thereby forming the microlens array.
