Disclosed is a pneumatic tire comprising an innerliner comprising a functionalized poly(isobutylene-co-p-methylstyrene) elastomer, at least one layered filler; and less than 8 phr of at least one processing aid; wherein the innerliner possesses a permeation coefficient of less than 200 mm·cm3/m2·day at 40° C.; and wherein the tire is selected from truck tires, airplane tires, off-the-road tires and farm tractor tires. In a preferred embodiment, the tire is formed by a process of contacting the functionalized poly(isobutylene-co-p-methylstyrene) elastomer, at least one layered filler, and at least one solvent to form an nanocomposite composition; and combining the nanocomposite composition with the at least one processing aid and a curative composition to form the innerliner, then forming the tire comprising the innerliner.

In some embodiments, the elastomeric composition is substantially free of naphthenic oil.

The present invention includes blends of a halogenated elastomer such as a butyl rubber or an interpolymer of, on one embodiment, a C4 to C7 isomonoolefin, a para-methylstyrene and a para-(halomethylstyrene), the interpolymer having been pre-mixed with an exfoliating compound and clay, the entire blend forming a nanocomposite in one embodiment. The clay may or may not have undergone an additional exfoliating treatment prior to blending with the halogenated elastomer. The interpolymer/clay mixture forms a distinct phase in the nanocomposite blend of the invention. The blend of the invention has improved air barrier properties and is suitable as an air barrier.

The co-polymerization reaction of one or more olefin monomers, such as propylene, with &agr;,&ohgr;-diene units and the resulting copolymers are provided. More specifically, the copolymer may have from 90 to 99.999 weight percent of olefins and from 0.001 to 2.000 weight percent of &agr;,&ohgr;-dienes. The copolymer may have a weight average molecular weight in the range from 50,000 to 2,000,000, a crystallization temperature in the range from 115° C. to 135° C. and a melt flow rate in the range from 0.1 dg/min to 100 dg/min. These copolymers may be employed in a wide variety of applications, the articles of which include, for example, films, fibers, such as spunbonded and meltblown fibers, fabrics, such as nonwoven fabrics, and molded articles. The copolymer may further include at least two crystalline populations. Desirably, the melting point range of one of the crystalline populations is distinguishable from the melting point range of another crystalline population by a temperature range of from 1° C. to 8° C. More desirably, one of the crystalline populations has a melting point in the range from 152° C. to 158° C. and another crystalline population has a melting point in the range from 142° C. to 148° C.

The carbon black may be graphitized to reduce interactions between the carbon black and the nanoclays. The elastomeric nanocomposite may, with or without the use of the graphitized carbon black, may calendared or extruded in such a manner as to orient the nanoclay platelets within the composition such that the oriented nanoclay elastomer nanocomposite has an orientation parameter of greater than 0.15.

A nanocomposite comprising at least one elastomer and at least one nanofiller. The elastomer comprises units derived from isoolefins having from 4 to 7 carbon atoms and at least one multiolefin. The nanofiller comprise a layered filler and an amine modifier wherein the nanofiller is substantially free of any unassociated amines. By eliminating unassociated amines in the nanofiller, prior to contact with the elastomer, the nanocomposite has improved processability characteristics while maintaining desired impermeability characteristics.
