摘要: Absorbent articles containing absorbent cores of fluff pulp frequently contain wrinkles in the absorbent core that run from side to side of the article, typically normal to the machine direction in the manufacturing process. Side-to-side wrinkles are deleterious in that they provide large flow channels for urine or other body fluids to escape to the edge of the article. Frequently, such wrinkles are present after manufacturing, before the article has been folded or worn. The cause of the wrinkles is believed to be due to natural instabilities during compression of the fluff pad shortly after it is formed. Means for reducing cross-directional wrinkles include the use of grooved, drilled, or patterned compression rolls to densify the fluff pulp while providing opportunities for reduced in-plane displacement during compression or, if in-plane displacement does occur, providing paths for cross-directional displacement as well as machine-direction displacement so that continuous CD wrinkles cannot form. The use of large diameter rolls with soft rubber covers can also be used.

摘要: An absorbent article with improved body fit wherein a combination of downward-deflecting crease lines and an upward-deflecting shaping line are used in outer and central absorbent members, respectively, to achieve a form-fitting geometry in the crotch region while also enhancing control over fluid flow in the article. Embodiments with wicking barriers between the outer and central absorbent members are especially useful in achieving leakage reduction.

摘要: An absorbent article comprising a central absorbent member and a lateral wicking barrier for inhibition of wicking from the central regions of the article to an outlying outer absorbent member. The wicking barrier has a vertical component for prevention of radial wicking in the plane of the article and thus promotes center filling of the article with fluid and reduces the likelihood of leaks from the sides of the article. The wicking barrier can also have a horizontal component to prevent leakage, redirect fluid flow, and improve fit and performance of the article. In one embodiment, the central absorbent member is a concentric absorbent structure having alternating rings of barrier material and absorbent material, including a spiral wound composite formed from a layer of barrier material wound with a layer of absorbent material and then sliced.

摘要: The present invention relates to an apparatus for applying a liquid coating onto an object. The apparatus includes a device that has a handle and a transfer medium which is attached to the handle. The apparatus further includes a cover that is attached to the device. The cover includes a closure element that is operable to open and close an end of the cover. When the end of the cover is open, the cover is movable between a first position where the cover protects the transfer medium and a second position where the cover protects the handle. In another example embodiment, the cover is formed of a removable first layer that is positioned adjacent to the transfer medium when the cover is in the first position and a removable second layer that is positioned adjacent to the handle when the cover is in the second position.

摘要: A gradient material comprising at least two types of nanofibers distributed non-uniformly throughout the material to form one or more gradients is provided. In one embodiment, the at least two types of nanofibers intertwine to form a single layer of material, i.e., are at least partially physically intertwined, i.e., entangled with one another in a multi-component material. Such intertwining can occur when both types of nanofibers are deposited substantially simultaneously in an overlapping region. In another embodiment, the at least two types of nanofibers combine to form a plurality of layers. The nanofibers can be electrospun fibers. The material can have a gradient in the planar and/or thickness directions. Embodiments of the invention also provide processes for producing the gradient nanofiber material. The materials are useful for any type of disposable garment, wipe, hospital garment, face mask, sterile wrap, air filter, water filter and so forth. Materials described herein can provide strong and varying surface effects, such as wicking. In one embodiment, hydrophobic fibers have a sufficiently small diameter to create a lotus effect.

摘要: Disposable liquid absorbent mats are described. The mats generally include at least a liquid absorbent layer and a liquid impervious layer. The liquid absorbent layer may be made from a tissue web, a hydroentangled web, an airlaid web, a coform web, and the like. The liquid impervious layer, on the other hand, may comprise a meltspun web, a film, a hydroentangled web, or even a tissue web that has been treated with a sizing agent that renders the web resistant to fluid flow. In one embodiment, the mats can be made so as to have a relatively low caliper so that the mats can be spirally wound into a roll. In other embodiments, however, the mats may be packaged in a stacked arrangement. The mats have various uses and applications. For instance, the mats are well suited for use during food preparation. The mats are well suited to absorbing fluids while preventing the fluids from striking through the product. In some embodiments, the mats are also well suited to serve as an absorbent and cut resistant surface. An added benefit is the addition of a layer of polymer to the bottom side of the film to achieve non-slip feature to an absorbent and cut resistant food prep mat.
