摘要: A configurable gauge apparatus includes a flat panel display (FPD) for displaying a user-defined gauge face, a transparent panel spaced from the FPD through which the displayed gauge face is viewed, and a mechanical pointer disposed between the FPD and the transparent panel for indicating a current value of a parameter of interest. The pointer includes a stem and a hub that rotatably supports the stem, and the hub is mounted on the FPD or the transparent panel. Pointer position is regulated either magnetically with a pointer magnet and a magnetic field generator disposed behind the FPD, or electrically with a motorized hub activated with transparent conductors formed on the FPD or transparent panel. The stem of the pointer is illuminated by either the FPD, or a hub-mounted LED activated with transparent conductors. Transparent conductors are also used to form a sensor array for detecting pointer position.

摘要: An alcohol sensing device is provided for determination of the alcohol content within an alcohol/gasoline fuel mixture which is being provided for the operation of an internal combustion engine. The sensing device uses infrared spectrometry measuring techniques. The infrared sensing device determines the ratio of light absorption by the alcohol/gasoline mixture at two discrete wavelengths within the near-infrared spectrum. The two particular wavelengths of interest are preferably chosen so that at one of the infrared wavelengths, alcohol is strongly absorbing while the gasoline exhibits very little absorption, and at the second wavelength both the alcohol and the gasoline exhibit are essentially non-absorbing. An alternating current is used to switch the light beam between two power settings so as to vary the intensity of transmitted light at both wavelengths. The light beam is transmitted through the alcohol/gasoline fuel mixture so that the two discrete wavelengths traverse the same optical path. Two detectors are adjacently disposed so as to receive the emitted light from each wavelength after their transmission through the alcohol/gasoline fuel mixture. Once the signals corresponding to the two wavelengths are obtained, the ratio of the absorbances by the fuel mixture at both wavelengths is computed. From this ratio, and the temperature of the fuel mixture, the concentration of alcohol in the fuel is determined.

摘要: A breath analyzer system and method for determining an estimate of blood alcohol concentration of a person. A light source projects light into a sampling region where breath from the person is expected. A first light detector and a second light detector are configured to detect light intensity of light having certain wavelengths at a first time and a second time. Signals from the light detectors at the first time and the second time are used to determine an estimate of the blood alcohol concentration of the person by determining a ratio of a first light detector signal change to a second light detector signal change.

摘要: A chemical vapor sensor is provided that measures a chemical species of interest with high sensitivity and chemical specificity. In an aspect, an ethanol vapor sensor is provided, sized for being inconspicuous and on-board a vehicle, having a passive measurement mode and an active breathalyzer mode, for detecting a motor vehicle driver that exceeds a legal limit of blood alcohol concentration (BAC), for use with vehicle safety systems. For the passive mode, a vapor concentrator is utilized to amplify a sampled vapor concentration to a detectible level for use with an infrared (IR) detector. In an aspect, ethanol vapor in a vehicle cabin is passively measured and if a predetermined ethanol level is measured, a countermeasure is invoked to improve safety. In an aspect, an active breathalyzer is used as a countermeasure. The active breathalyzer can be imposed for a number of vehicle trips or for a predetermined time period.

摘要: A gas vapor sensor indicates the relative concentrations and flow rate of a gas mixture. Acoustic noise is generated within a closed chamber by the gas mixture flowing therethrough or by ambient noise sources. The chamber has a fundamental resonant frequency which varies with the vapor concentration. Acoustic frequency components of the noise corresponding to the resonant frequency of the chamber are sharply reinforced and dominate the acoustic spectrum within the chamber. The spectrum is detected and frequency filtered by a pair of dissimilar parallel filters to produce two attenuated outputs. The difference between the attenuated outputs indicates the resonant frequency and is a measure of the vapor concentration. The strength of the acoustic spectrum together with the measured vapor concentration indicates the flow rate of the mixture.

摘要: An accelerometer is provided which is suitably rugged for use in on-board automotive safety control and navigational systems. The preferred thick film accelerometer is formed from an alumina substrate having an integrally formed U-shaped flexure member which surrounds an intermediate support member. A mass is provided on the unsupported end of the U-shaped flexure member. Deflection is maximum at the unsupported end of the U-shaped flexure member, while strain is maximum at the supported end of the flexure member. Four piezoresistors for detecting the strain within the flexure member corresponding to the acceleration in the direction perpendicular to the plane of the support member are provided on the U-shaped flexure member adjacent its supported ends. The four piezoresistors form a Wheatstone bridge, whose analog output voltage is conditioned and amplified to provide the output signal. The signal conditioning and amplifying circuitry are preferably located on the support member. The preferred accelerometer package further contains integrally formed means for preventing excessive deflection of the mass past a predetermined distance.

摘要: An apparatus comprises a sensor including a heater, an upstream detector and a downstream detector. An AC signal source excites the heater to generate propagating heat signals that are received by the upstream and downstream detectors. A first detecting circuit provides a first output signal responsive to the propagating heat signals received by the first detector and a second detecting circuit provides a second output signal responsive to the propagating heat signals received by the downstream detector. A difference circuit subtracts the first and second signals to obtain a difference signal and an output circuit provides an output signal responsive to the difference signal, which reflects both magnitude and phase. The resulting output signal has improved resolution and provides for improved sensor sensitivity.

摘要: The subject invention detects the presence of an ozone reducing coating on an automotive radiator of the type having spaced fins presenting electromagnetic surface properties different than the electromagnetic surface properties of the coating. In accordance with the subject invention light rays are emitted or reflected off the coating on the fins to a detector and a comparator compares these light rays to a predetermined benchmark to provide a signal in response to the detected light rays crossing the benchmark. In a species, a second detector is employed to detect rays from an un-coated section to establish the benchmark.
