Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices are described for increased wireless communications system capacity through hierarchical modulation of multiple transmission layers during certain transmission subframes in a wireless communications system. Various deployment scenarios may be supported that may provide communications modulated on both a base modulation layer as well as on an enhancement modulation layer that is superpositioned on the base modulation layer. Reference signals may be provided for channel estimation for both the base modulation layer and enhancement modulation layer.

Abstract: Systems and methodologies are described that facilitate handing over mobile device communications in a wireless network from a source base station to a target base station without using a random access channel (RACH). In this regard, the mobile device can monitor multiple base stations determining timing information related thereto and access scheduling request channels for the base stations. When ready for handover, the mobile device can request data resources over the scheduling request channel using the appropriate timing information.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices are described for wireless communication employing two-stage control channel messaging. Systems, methods, and apparatuses for two stage two-stage physical downlink control channel (PDCCH) with a downlink control information (DCI) flag and DCI format size indicator are described. For instance, the present disclosure presents an example method of wireless communication at a wireless device, which may include receiving, at a first bandwidth and during a transmission time interval (TTI), a first control channel message. In addition, the example method may include determining, based on a flag in the first control channel message, whether a second control channel message is present in the TTI. Furthermore, the example method may include receiving, at a second bandwidth, the second control channel message where the flag indicates that the second control channel message is present for the TTI.

Abstract: A first method for wireless communications may comprise determining sizes of payloads of user equipments (UEs), determining whether to multiplex the payloads of the UEs based on the sizes of the payloads, and allocating codes or cyclic shifts to the UEs to transmit the payloads on a single interlace of resources. A second method for wireless communications may comprise determining a first code or a first cyclic shift used for a first transmission using an interlace of resources, and allocating second codes or second cyclic shifts to UEs for a second transmission, where the second transmission may be multiplexed with the first transmission on the interlace of resources. A third method for wireless communications may comprise allocating a first interlace of resources for a first transmission for occupying an unlicensed radio frequency spectrum band, and allocating a second interlace of resources, occupied by a base station, for a second transmission.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices for soft hybrid automatic repeat request operation in wireless communication are described. A user equipment (UE) may fail to decode a received signal, for example. The UE may store a portion of the signal in a buffer if the signal size is greater than the buffer size; otherwise, the UE may store the entire signal in the buffer. The UE may then receive a second signal and combine the second signal with the stored portion of the first signal; the combined signal may be larger than the buffer size. This combined signal may, for example, have a code rate less than the first signal. The UE may perform a second decoding attempt on the combined signal. The UE may determine that the second decoding attempt failed and may store a portion of the combined signal in the buffer.
