Abstract:
A light emitting diode (LED) signaling apparatus for navigational aids is provided. The signaling apparatus comprises a plurality of high intensity LEDs with their output beams individually controlled by high precision optical beam transformers. The transformed LED beams are mixed in a predetermined manner by controlling the relative position, angular orientation, and other parameters of the LEDs to produce a desired illumination pattern.
Abstract:
This invention provides a UV spectroscopy apparatus and method for controlled drug waste diversion detection. The spectroscopy apparatus employs sample cells which have optimized optical path length such that the measured maximum absorbance of the drug is less than the detection limit of the system. Hence the full unsaturated absorption spectrum of the drug is revealed in the UV wavelength region from 230 nm (or even down to 195 nm) to 400 nm. This full spectrum analysis improves the specificity for drug identification and the accuracy for drug concentration verification. The spectral library of the apparatus comprises the spectra of preservative-free controlled drugs, common excipients, as well as typical diluents, which enables the identification of controlled drugs from different manufacturers and/or diluted with different types of diluents.
Abstract:
This invention discloses a reconfigurable cold plasma therapy device with enhanced safety. The plasma therapy device comprises a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) probe connected to a high voltage power supply, which supplies a high voltage to the DBD probe. The DBD probe comprises a handle having a designated handling area for the operator, whose material and thickness are selected such that when the high voltage is supplied to the DBD probe, the voltage charged onto the body of the operator is below a safety voltage. The low voltage prevents spark generation even when the operator is in close proximity to conductive subjects. As an additional feature, the dielectric barrier of the DBD probe is switchable, allowing both the material and the thickness of the dielectric barrier to be changed to control the property of the plasma discharge for treating different medical conditions.
Abstract:
This invention relates to a light delivery and collection device for performing spectroscopic analysis of a subject. The light delivery and collection device comprises a reflective cavity with two apertures. The first aperture receives excitation light which then diverges and projects onto the second aperture. The second aperture is applied to the subject such that the reflective cavity substantially forms an enclosure covering an area of the subject. The excitation light interacts with the covered area of the subject to produce inelastic scattering and/or fluorescence emission from the subject. The reflective cavity reflects the excitation light as well as the inelastic scattering and/or fluorescence emission that is reflected and/or back-scattered from the subject and redirects it towards the subject. This causes more excitation light to penetrate into the subject hence enabling sub-surface measurement and also improves the collection efficiency of the inelastic scattering or fluorescence emission. The shape of the reflective cavity is optimized to further improve the collection efficiency.
Abstract:
This invention relates to an apparatus and method for performing bidirectional Raman spectroscopy of a sample, preferably a diffusely scattering sample, in which two excitation light sources are employed to illuminate the sample from two opposite directions to excite Raman scattering signal from the sample. The Raman scattering signal which transmits through the sample are collected by two optical devices each positioned on the opposite side of the sample to obtain two transmission Raman spectra of the sample, which enables the accurate determination of the composition of the whole sample.
Abstract:
The present invention embodies a technique to embed a graphic representation and/or a concealed message such as but not limited to two dimensional codes such as quick response (QR) code matrices, fingerprints, coded fingerprint representations, iris imagery, iris coded representation, biometric hashes, palm print or portraits into a QR matrix code. In the case where biometric data such as finger print representation, iris coded representation or biometric hashes are encoded into the embedding, suitable binary representation of those patterns are generated before encoding. These concealed messages can be further encrypted using any cryptographic method such as public or private key or other suitable encrypting mechanisms adapted to the concealed message. For an implementation of the present invention in which a graphic representation is embedded into the code, the embedding process is based on an optimization method by which the color or luminance of the embedding is modified so as to minimize the visual distortion with respect to a reference image while maintaining the probability of decoding error of the standard and concealed code under a predetermined limit.

This invention discloses a compact laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) apparatus suitable for field operations. The LIBS apparatus comprises a Q-switched laser with laser pulse energy between several tens and several thousands of micro joules (μJ), which is significantly lower than that of traditional LIBS lasers. The spectrograph of the LIBS apparatus employs a dual CCD (charge coupled device) design, which maintains compact size and in the meantime offers large spectral coverage and high spectral resolution.
Abstract:
This invention discloses a substrate enhanced laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) apparatus for liquid analysis. The LIBS apparatus comprises a pulsed laser for producing a laser beam, a substrate made of a material having a high absorption coefficient at the laser wavelength for receiving the liquid sample, an optical lens or mirror for focusing the laser beam onto the liquid sample to produce a plasma emission, and a spectrometer for measuring the optical spectrum of the plasma emission. When the thickness of the liquid sample reaches an optimum value, the plasma emission from the liquid sample is enhanced by the substrate to produce a strong LIBS signal for spectral analysis.
Abstract:
An improved apparatus and method for deep tissue laser therapy, in which the phase of the laser light is spatially modulated to produce a modulated laser beam. The modulated laser beam is able to restore its intensity profile even after being scattered by the skin or the superficial layer of the tissue, allowing it to penetrate deep into the tissue to provide efficient therapeutic treatment.
