Abstract:
An optical module includes a substrate, one or a plurality of planar optical devices mounted on the substrate, and a waveguide block including one or a plurality of curved waveguides formed on a plane. The waveguide block is mounted on the substrate such that the plane on which the curved waveguides are formed is perpendicular to the substrate and the curved waveguides and an incidence face or an emitting face of the planar optical device are opposed to each other on one end face of the waveguide block. Further, the waveguide block is configured so that an optical fiber can be connected to the other end face of the waveguide block which is orthogonal to the one end face.
Abstract:
The intensity of signals in optical networks can be controlled using a variable optical attenuator (VOA). The present invention is a VOA that is particularly well suited for optical networks, for example to provide channel-by-channel normalization of gain control of wavelength division multiplexed signals. The inventive VOA includes a waveguide having an electro-optical material and electrodes that produce an electric field within the electro-optical material when a voltage difference is applied to the electrodes. The electro-optical material can either be a substrate or can be a layer deposited on a substrate. In an alternative embodiment, a polarization independent VOA is formed from a waveguide that includes two, end-to-end waveguides. In one embodiment, a 90 degree polarization rotator is provided between the two waveguides. In another embodiment, each of the two waveguides has a different electro-optical material selected to selectively pass one of two 90 degree polarizations.

An optical connector includes: a holding member that holds an optical transmission line; a lens member that has a lens; a concavo-convex structure provided between the holding member and the lens member; and a moving member that moves the concavo-convex structure between a first state where a protrusion and a recess of the concavo-convex structure are engaged with each other and a second state where a gap is formed between the protrusion and the recess.
Abstract:
The optical module includes a first optical waveguide part including a first waveguide core, a second optical waveguide part including a second waveguide core and provided such that the second waveguide core and the first waveguide core are positioned partially close to each other so that a light propagating in one of the first and second waveguide cores can be coupled to the other of the first and second waveguide cores, an electro-optic material layer provided between the first and second waveguide cores and formed from an electro-optic material, and an electrode for applying an electric field to the electro-optic material layer so that the refractive index of the electro-optic material layer varies and the optical coupling coefficient between the first and second waveguide cores varies.
Abstract:
Cascaded optical deflectors are formed from light deflecting elements of an electro-optical material that are individually controlled according to applied voltage differences across the elements. The shape of the elements are determined by the shape of the electrodes on either side of the electro-optical material, while the refractive index is controlled by the sign and magnitude of a voltage difference applied across the elements. In particular, the invention includes light deflection elements that are tilted with respect to one another and that are individually controlled to provide for the deflection of light in an improved manner.
Abstract:
An extrusion-molded portion in the upper side portion of a weather strip is provided with a main seal member, a sub-seal member and a coupling portion. The main seal member has a first fitting base portion in the form of a substantially flat plate fitted to the first retainer of a door frame, and a hollow seal portion formed integrally with the first fitting base portion. The sub-seal member has a second fitting base portion in the form of a substantially flat plate fitted to a second retainer, and a seal lip. The seal lip, the coupling portion and the hollow seal portion are consecutively formed by monolithic molding with EPDM sponge rubber. The greater part of the second fitting base portion and the central part of the first fitting base portion are formed of EPDM solid rubber. Therefore, the difference in expansion rate hardly occurs and a warp is restrained from being generated.
Abstract:
An optical switch having a common waveguide and optical properties to improve switch performance is presented. The common waveguide is located between a first plural light deflection elements and a second plural light deflection elements, each including prisms made by electro-optic material. The common waveguide material is selected to improve switch performance by increasing the deflection of the light deflecting elements and/or reducing the effects induced by birefringence from the electro-optical material. The present invention can be used in optical switch designs having common waveguides or other optical switches.
Abstract:
A loop heat pipe system includes a loop heat pipe (LHP), a temperature sensor, a heater and a controller. The temperature sensor measures temperature of a working fluid portion of the LHP in which the working fluid has different phases depending on whether or not the LHP is in a disable status not to start up a heat transportation, in which a liquid phase of the working fluid does not exist in an evaporator of the LHP. The heater heats a heating target part of a vapor line. The controller, in order to start up the LHP, turns on the heater, monitors temperature of the heating target part using the temperature sensor, and turns off the heater when detecting a change in the monitored temperature, caused by condensation of a vapor phase of the working fluid.

To uniformly cool down armature windings along the circumferential direction of a stator in a generator motor. A generator motor includes a stator 1 fixed to the inner diameter side of a housing 18, a rotor 130 rotatably supported by bearings 5, and armature windings wound around the teeth of a stator core 110. Each of brackets 200 provided via the bearings 5 has a passage 201, 202 through which cooling oil flows and injection holes 204 which communicate with the passage and inject cooling oil at positions opposite to winding ends of the armature windings. Cooling oil is injected toward the winding ends of the armature windings from the injection holes 204 of the brackets 200 arranged on opposite axial sides of a shaft 6. In the flow rate distribution of the oil from the plurality of the injection holes 204, the flow rate of the oil from any of the injection holes 204 is set to be greater as the position of the injection hole 204 is higher above the level of the shaft 6. The arrangement pitch among the injection holes 204 provided on each of the brackets 200 is dense in a vertically upper portion of the bracket 200, and gradually sparser in a portion thereof closer to the level of shaft 6.
Abstract:
An apparatus comprises one or more electro-optical coupling modules. An electro-optical coupling module comprises a diode, a flexible optical coupling element, a reflective surface, and an optical fiber. The diode performs an electro-optical conversion on a signal. The flexible optical coupling element communicates the signal between the diode and the reflective surface. The reflective surface reflects the signal between the flexible optical coupling element and the optical fiber.
