The structure is provided with porous partition walls, functioning as a filtration layer, through which exhaust gas flowing into the cells can flow out, and plugging portions. Additional plugging portions are further disposed in the open end portions to which the plugging portions are not disposed (unplugged open end portions) not so as to plug unplugged open end portions. Each cross-sectional shape of additional plugging portions in a direction perpendicular to the axial direction forms a predetermined pattern shape as a whole, and a barycenter of the pattern shape is located in almost the center of a cross section of a flow of the exhaust gas in a direction perpendicular to the axial direction.

A V-type, multicylinder internal combustion engine with multiple isolated crank chambers formed by partitioning a space inside of a crankcase with multiple support walls for supporting a crankshaft, and multiple oil outlet holes, respectively communicating with the isolated crank chambers to separately discharge oil from the multiple isolated crank chambers, uses a single scavenging pump to discharge the oil from the isolated crank chambers rather than connecting multiple scavenging pumps, respectively, to the oil outlet holes. The engine includes an oil collecting pan mounted on a bottom wall of a crank chamber covering the multiple oil outlet holes respectively communicating with the multiple isolated crank chambers for collecting the oil passed through the oil outlet holes. The oil collecting pan has an oil reservoir with an oil outlet opening, and a single scavenging pump for drawing the oil stored in the oil collecting pan through the oil outlet opening.

In a section of the filter, a sectional area of the predetermined cell is different from that of the remaining cell, a value of a ratio of a channel hydraulic diameter of the cell having a large sectional area to that of the cell having a small sectional area is 1.2 or more, at least a sectional shape of the cell having the large sectional area is a quadrangular shape whose portion corresponding to at least one corner portion is circular, and a value of a ratio of minimum thickness of a portion (intersection portion) in which the partition walls cross one another to a thickness of each partition wall 2 is 0.7 or more and less than 1.3. The honeycomb filter is capable of inhibiting a fluid inflow-side end face (opening of an inflow-side cell) from being closed by particulates and the like, and maintaining high strength.

The cordierite ceramic filter has a mean pore size in a range of aggregate mean size.times.0.15.+-.5 .mu.m, has a porosity of more than 30% and has a compressive strength more than 100 kgf/cm.sup.2 in a direction parallel to a flow passage. The cordierite ceramic filter has an excellent filter regeneration function, has a high mechanical strength and is light and compact.
