A leveling device capable of adjusting the inclination of a member, such as a vertical support post of a laser beam guidance apparatus for use in performing biopsies, in orthogonal first and second planes. The device has a fixed base plate upon which an intermediate tilt plate is rotatably supported so as to allow rotation of the intermediate tilt plate in the first plane. An upper tilt plate is rotatably supported on the intermediate tilt plate so as to allow rotation of the upper tilt plate in the second plane. A first adjusting screw provides adjustment of the rotation of the intermediate tilt plate in the first plane by imparting a force that counterbalances a spring force that also acts on the intermediate tilt plate. A second adjusting screw provides adjustment of the rotation of the upper tilt plate in the second plane by imparting a force that counterbalances a spring force that also acts on the upper tilt plate. The spring forces and the counterbalancing adjusting screw forces maintain the leveling device in the desired orientation.

A guidance method for use in conjunction with a C.T. scanner allows a user to accurately place a drainage catheter, biopsy needle, or like catheter within a patient's body. A scan of the patient's body is made using the C.T. scanner to form a cross-sectional image of the target area within the patient's body. An insertion path is selected on the scanned cross-sectional image to reach the target area, and the lateral distance is determined between the vertical axis of the scanned image and the insertion site. The insertion angle and insertion distance along the insertion path are also computed from the cross-sectional image. The lighting system of the C.T. scanner projects a laser-generated longitudinal reference beam on to the patient's body corresponding with the vertical axis of the scanned image; the lighting system further projects at least one transverse beam on to the patient's body for designating the vertical plane through which an image was scanned. The insertion site is located by measuring upon the patient's body, along the transverse reference beam, the aforementioned lateral distance, starting from the longitudinal reference beam. The insertion site is marked, and th tip of the catheter is advanced into the insertion site, while maintaining the catheter within the transverse reference beam. The catheter is maintained at the computed insertion angle relative to a horizontal plane, and the catheter is advanced by the computed insertion distance to reach the target area.

A guide for locating a target object within a visually opaque but x-ray transparent object has a base creating a first reference plane. A vertical post extends upward from the base perpendicular to the first reference plane. First target sighting members, which are at least partially opaque to x-ray are mounted for movement relative to the vertical support member and provide for creating a line parallel to the reference plane through the target. A system is provided for aligning x-ray fluoroscope with the first target. A second target has two target sighting members, one on an arm above the target object and the other on an arm below the target object. The x-ray fluoroscope is aligned with these such that when the x-ray fluoroscope is projecting in a line parallel to the upright support and perpendicular to the reference plane, it extends through opaque sights and through the target. The distance from the second target to the upright support is measured, and the probe is mounted at a predetermined angle, the line of which extends through a point on the vertical post equal to the distance from the post to the second sight divided by the tangent of the predetermined angle.
