Methods and apparatus for ascertaining a position of a read/write head relative to a reference position on a rotatable disk in a computer disk drive are disclosed. In one aspect of the present invention, a method for determining the position of a read/write head relative to a reference position on a rotatable disk in a computer disk drive includes reading amplitudes of a set of servo bursts embedded in tracks of the disk and classifying the servo bursts into a converging servo burst set and a detection servo burst set around the reference position. The method also includes forming a position error signal by augmenting a detection servo burst signal with a converging servo burst signal as well as a normalization factor. The converging servo burst signal is formed from amplitudes of the converging servo burst set at the position of the read/write head. The detection servo burst signal is formed from amplitudes of the detection servo burst set at the position of the read/write head. The position error signal represents an offset from the reference position.

A method and apparatus for creating a position error signal (PES) voltage v. track distance curve for the head of a hard disk drive. The disk has a dedicated track which contains a plurality of servo bits that allow the head to be centered with the centerline of the track. The dedicated track also has a number of calibration bits each embedded at a known location off-set from the track centerline. The PES voltage v. track distance curve is generated by reading each calibration bit and storing the corresponding amplitude of the position error signal in a memory device of the disk drive. Each calibration bit is located from the track centerline a distance that is different from the other calibration bits so that there are provided multiple points on the track curve.

The track follow gain control of an actuator controller is calibrated by injecting a sinusoidal signal into the position error signal during a servo burst interrupt. The injected signal is bandpass filtered to optimize the coherence of the measurement. A sine error signal is derived based on the filtered (sine actual) signal and a sine desired signal. The sine error signal is applied to the track follow gain control to adjust the amplitude of the control signal to the actuator based on the sine error signal. The sine error is derived by averaging the peaks of the filtered injected signal and subtracting the averaged signal from the desired signal which represents the expected error of the sinusoidal signal under ideal conditions. The recording surfaces may be segmented into a plurality of radial zones in which case a central track is identified in one zone on a selected disc surface. The sine error signal is derived for that zone, after which the process is repeated for the corresponding zone of each other recording surface. The sine error signals derived from the several disc surfaces are averaged to adjust the track follow gain control for the common zone of all disc surfaces.

A mechanism for servowriting on a storage medium of a storage device. The storage device has a transducer and a servo loop for positioning the transducer with respect to the storage medium. At least one transition is written on a track of the storage medium, while servoing on other transitions previously recorded on the storage medium. A reference waveform is derived as a function of a closed loop response of the servo loop and a position error waveform. The position error waveform corresponds to one or more position errors of the transducer relative to the previously recorded transitions. The reference waveform is usable in writing subsequent tracks on the storage medium. Using the reference waveform for writing subsequent tracks provides a substantial rejection of mechanical disturbances by the servo loop.

A novel disk controller and method performed by a disk controller is disclosed which provides a highly efficient means of interrupting the reading or writing of a field in a sector on a magnetic disk for skipping over a servo burst located anywhere within the field. The servo burst may be located at a different location in the fields of successive sectors. In the preferred embodiment, the servo burst skipping operation is controlled by microcode in the disk controller's sequencer RAM, and the servo burst skipping operation is initiated by a servo interrupt signal. The servo interrupt signal is generated by the disk controller when a servo burst is to occur. This servo interrupt signal may be generated at fixed time intervals, using a count from a disk clock, or by counting the bytes in a sector leading to the servo burst. The number of bytes leading to the servo burst may vary, and, in one embodiment, the number of bytes before the servo burst occurs within a sector is contained in the ID field for that sector. The servo burst skipping operation performs the steps necessary for skipping over the servo burst and causing the microcode to return to an appropriate instruction in the microcode.

A disk drive is disclosed comprising a head actuated over a disk comprising a plurality of tracks defined by a plurality of servo sectors. An estimated track ID is generated and a plurality of proximate track IDs is generated having values proximate the estimated track ID. A set of Gray codes is generated each corresponding to the estimated track ID and the proximate track IDs, wherein each Gray code in the set of Gray codes comprises N bits, and M bits out of a high order of the N bits comprise the same value. A recorded Gray code is detected in a first servo sector to generate a detected Gray code, and an error in the detected Gray code is corrected by inverting at least one bit in the detected Gray code comprising a value that is different from the value of the corresponding bit in the M bits.
