In a lumber factory, an automated laminated veneer lumber (LVL) process supported by a lumber production line employing a cross-cutting and rip-sawing stage, a dip-coating stage, a spray-coating stage, a print-marking stage, and a stacking, packaging and wrapping stage. At the dip-coating stage, cross-cut and rip-sawed LVL product is automatically transported and submerged through a dipping reservoir containing clean fire inhibiting chemical (CFIC) liquid, and then wet-stacked and set aside to dry. Once dried, the dip-coated LVL products are returned to the production line and sprayed coated with a moisture, fire and UV protective coating at the spray-coating stage, and then passed through a drying tunnel for quick drying of the spray-coating to produce Class-A fire-protected LVL products. The Class-A fire-protected LVL products are stacked, packaged and wrapped at the stacking, packaging and wrapping stage into a package of Class-A fire-protected LVL products, ready for shipping.

The method includes the steps of providing a piece of wood to be treated; heating the piece of wood for a predetermined period of time, the piece of wood being heated at a temperature A; subsequently immersing at least a portion of the piece of wood in a bath of liquefied water repellent, the bath being at a temperature B, for a predetermined period of time. Thereafter the piece of wood is removed from the bath and allowed to cool. The temperature A is above 100° C. and the temperature B is below 100° C. but above a liquefying point for the water repellent, and a differential between temperatures A and B is at least 60° C.

Wood preservatives, methods for protecting wood and wood-based products and/or structures utilizing the preservatives, and treated wood and wood-based articles and/or structures incorporating the preservatives are described. Methods are also provided for remediating structures already infected with mold. The subject wood preservative formulation includes a borate compound and a fatty acid. The addition of an emulsifier to the formulation further facilitates application of the treatment. The combination of a borate compound and fatty acid combination typically provide a synergistic effect compared to the additive result provided by the combination's individual components.

A hoist for dipping a package of lumber or other similar work product into a tank of liquid is fabricated basically as a weldment of readily available steel shapes and is of a rugged, reliable design. A vertically movable carriage with forwardly projecting prongs at its lower end receives a package of work product and clamps located above the prongs tightly clamp the package to the carriage during a dipping procedure. The hoist is designed to allow package delivery and removal, to and from the hoist, by a fork lift truck. After placing a package on the hoist the fork lift operator may push a single push button and a control system for the hoist thereafter causes the hoist to automatically go through a full cycle of operation including a immersion period the length of which may be manually adjusted.

The apparatus includes a horizontal receiving substrate having a resilient gasket extending over the top surface in a closed figure and spaced from the edge of the substrate. A movable cover member including an inverted shallow chamber is provided with a matching resilient gasket on the underside. Vacuum means are connected to the cover. Means are provided for moving the transport cover and substrate into opposing positions so that a porous panel is clamped with between the cover and the substrate gaskets to seal off the major surface portions of the top and bottom faces of the panel while leaving a peripheral region, including the edge, exposed. A tank containing a fluid medium is arranged to move up and around the substrate so that the fluid medium in the tank contacts the surface of the peripheral region of the panel to achieve impregnation. A vacuum is drawn on the cover chamber so that the fluid medium is drawn into the peripheral regions of the panel. Also disclosed is an arrangement with a tank surrounding the perimeter of the substrate and having a means for changing the level of fluid medium in the tank. The level can be changed by inserting a displacement member into the fluid medium or by forcing the fluid medium into the tank from a hyperbaric reservoir chamber.
