    摘要: In a cutting tool having an indexable cutting insert with exactly four cutting portions, the cutting insert is removably securable to an insert holder by a fastener. The cutting insert has two opposing end surfaces with a peripheral side surface extending therebetween, and each cutting portion has a major cutting edge formed by the intersection of a rake surface and a relief surface. The peripheral side surface has first and second pairs of opposing side surfaces which include the four relief surfaces and the four rake surfaces, respectively. In an end view, four cutting points on the four major cutting edges define the transitions between the first and second pairs of opposing side surfaces, and a minimum first length dimension between the second pair of opposing side surfaces is less than six-tenths of a minimum second length dimension between two of the four cutting points.

    摘要: A rhombus-shaped cutting insert has opposing upper and lower surfaces, and a peripheral side surface extending therebetween having alternating obtuse and acute corner surfaces separated by four relief surfaces. The cutting insert is removably secured in an insert receiving pocket of a tool holder and indexable about a central axis. A nose cutting edge is formed at the intersection of one of the upper and lower surfaces with each of the two acute corner surfaces. One of the upper and lower surfaces has an engagement surface having a single primary and four secondary engagement elements. The primary and secondary engagement elements or portions thereof, exhibit mirror symmetry about primary and secondary engagement planes. The primary engagement plane contains the central axis and intersects each nose cutting edge, and each secondary engagement plane does not contain the central axis and forms an acute engagement angle with the primary engagement plane.

The clamp and actuator components include ramping surfaces for cooperatively biasing the clamp into an engagement position. The actuator component is configured to move along an actuator movement axis and includes an actuator relief surface connected, and extending at a different angle, to the actuator component's ramping surface. The different angle is configured to facilitate disengagement of the actuator component and clamp for a smaller movement of the actuator component along the actuator movement axis than would have been the case in the absence of such configuration, thereby allowing a compact construction of the assembly.

In the cutting insert of the present invention, a bottom surface of a concave groove 21 includes a first bottom surface 211 continuous with a cutting edge part 5, and a second bottom surface 212 which is located on a side further remote from the cutting edge part 5 than the first bottom surface 211, and is located at a lower position than a virtual extension line L1 of an end portion of the first bottom surface 211 on a side remote from the cutting edge part 5. Further, a pair of inclined surfaces 23 are located on a side further remote from the cutting edge part 5 than the end portion of the first bottom surface 211 on the side remote from the cutting edge part 5 in a top view. Therefore, the diameter of generated chips decreases by the fact that the chips are curled while sinking in space formed at a lower position than the virtual extension line L1 of the first bottom surface 211. Consequently, the chip discharge direction is stabilized, thus achieving satisfactory chip discharge performance.

The cutting insert is replaceably mounted to the insert pocket.
