A pre-selector gear shift for a bicycle, utilizing dual pedal driven sprockets coupled by chains to dual derailleur type gear units at the rear wheel. In the pedal supporting hub is a clutch mechanisms, with an actuating lever for coupling either sprocket selectively to the pedals, so that only one derailleur unit is driven at a time. The actuating lever also operates gear shift means with cable connections to the derailleur units, allowing the non-operating unit to be shifted to a pre-selected drive ratio while the other unit is in drive operation. A simple positive motion of the lever then engages the pre-selected drive coupling.

A chain drive transfer case is adapted for optional use with various accessory transmissions or rate changers which are interchangeably attached to one side of the chain case. The chain case includes an input shaft which has a splined end projecting through an opening in the case for coupling with the input shaft of any of the accessory transmissions or for use with an engagement or neutral lockout attachment. Each of the accessory transmissions has a tubular output shaft which is concentric with the chain case input shaft and which extends through said opening in the chain case to drivingly engage a chain sprocket which is supported on the chain case input shaft.

A bicycle change gear transmission according to which one end of a shift lever is secured to a winding drum to which one end of an inner wire connected to the change gear transmission is secured while a clutch drum is secured to the other end of said shift lever, and a rotary gear is interlocked with a motor through the intervention of a transmission gear train. Furthermore, a clutch spring has one end secured to the inner side face of said rotary gear and wound around the clutch drum, a control switch mechanism being mounted adjacent one handle of the bicycle handle bar while a spacer is located contiguously with said rotary gear and has a control plate provided with a set of contact pieces respectively having corresponding slots and projections and connected to said control switch mechanism through separate circuits, two operating switches being provided in said control switch mechanism and connected respectively to a driving circuit and a braking circuit so that the shift lever may be automatically displaced to its predetermined positions by operating said switches selectively.

AN AUTOMATIC TWO-SPEED TRASMISSION FOR MINI-BIKE AND OTHER LIGHT-WEIGHT VEHICLES. A FIRST CENTRIFUGAL MAIN CLUTCH ON THE ENGINE SHAFT DRIVES PARALLEL CHAINS TO HIGHAND LOW-SPPED SPROCKETS ON A JACK SHAFT WHICH IS CHAINCONNECTED TO THE DRIVE-WHEE. THE LOW-SPEED SPROCKET DRIVES THE JACK SHAFT THROUGH A ONE-WAY, ROLLER "LOW" CLUTCH OF STUDY 4-ROLLER CONSTRUCTION, WHICH ALLOWS THE JACK SHAFT TO OVERRUN WHEN THE HIGH DRIVE ENGAGES. THE HIGH-SPEED SPROCKET DRIVES THE CLUTCH SHOES OF A SECOND CETRIFUGAL "HIGH" CLUTCH WHICH HAS ITS CLUTCH DRUM FIXED TO THE JACK SHAFT. THE HIGH-CLUTCH SHOES ARE PRIMARILY CENTRIFUGALLY RESPONSIVE, BUT ARE ARRANGED TO HAVE LIMITED SELF-ENRGIZING ACTION AND THEREBY TO MAINTAIN SMOOTH ENGAGEMENT AND RELEASE AS TRANSITION HANGES OCCUR DURING SHIFTS. THE COMBINATION GIVES RELIABLY PREDICTABLE SHIFTS IN RESPONSE TO DRIVE CONTROL OF ENGINE SPEED, AND SMOOTH TRANSITIONS BETWEEN LOW DRIVE AND HIGH DRIVE.
THE JACK SHAFT ASSEMBLY COMPRISES A CONTINUOUSLY SLOTTED SHAFT ON WHICH THE CLUTCHES, SPROCKETS, A BRAKE DRUM, AND SUPPORTING BEARINGS ARE MOUNTED IN AXIALLY ADJUSTABLE RELATION TO ADAPT SUCH ASSEMBLY FOR VERSATILE APPLICATION TO DIFFERENT BIKE STRUCTURES AND FOR USE AS A MODIFICATION KIT ON EXISTING BIKES.
