Cobalt and manganese oxidation catalyst metals are recovered from trimellitic anhydride process residue by extracting the residue with water and using the extract solution as a diluting solution in an electrodialyzer the separation stack of which comprises an anode channel and at least one three channel repeating unit wherein each repeating unit having in sequence channels A, B, and C. In this separation stack the anode channel is formed by an anode and a cation permeation membrane, Channel A is formed by two cation permeation membranes, Channel B is formed by a cation permeation membrane and an anion permeation membrane, and Channel C is formed by an anion permeation membrane and either a cation permeation membrane or a cathode. A suitable anolyte flows through the anode channel. The diluting solution is fed to the A channels. An electrolyte is fed to the B channels. A suitable catholyte is fed to the C channels. Concentrating solution of cobalt and manganese substantially free of metal and organic contaminants is effluent from the B channels.The metals cobalt or cobalt and manganese can be recovered as an aqueous solution of acetate salts from an aqueous solution containing aromatic compounds including benzoic acid and one or more of the toluic acid, phthalic acid, and carboxybenzaldehyde isomers by electrodialysis using acetic acid and the catholyte, water as the metal acetate solvent, and the aqueous solution acid oxygen-containing aromatic compounds, and the metal ions as a more efficient than precipitating the metals from such solution as their carbonates and dissolving the carbonate precipitate in acetic acid.

A process for the treatment of a complex manganese ore, wherein it comprises the following stages:(a) crushing the ore,(b) subdividing the crushed ore into a first part and a second part,(c) preparing the first pulp from the first part of the crushed ore,(d) reacting the first pulp with a reducing agent to obtain a manganous sulphate solution,(e) separating the liquid phase constituted by the thus obtained manganous sulphate solution from the solid phase of the thus treated first pulp,(f) preparing a second pulp from the second part of the crushed ore,(g) subjecting the second pulp to a solubilization treatment of the nickel, copper and cobalt by reacting it hot with sulphuric acid and the manganous sulphate solution obtained in stage (e),(h) separating the liquid phase and the solid phase of the thus treated second pulp, and(i) recovering the nickel, copper and cobalt from the liquid phase separated in stage (h).

The selective leaching of metal ions from various iron oxide and manganese oxide containing ores employs intermediary solutions. The leaching processes are based upon a redox acid leach step employing stabilized cuprous ions and, in one instance, a combination thereof with ferrous ions. Leaching is conducted at low temperatures, up to about 90.degree. C. and low pressures, up to about 1.5 MPa and at a pH of about 1.5 to 2.5. Nickel and cobalt recoveries from the ores, employing these processes, will usually equal or exceed 90 percent. The intermediary solutions comprise stabilized acidic cuprous ions Cu.sup.+ L wherein L is a stabilizing ligand selected from the group consisting of CO, XRCN and Cl.sup.-, X being --H or --OH and R being aliphatic having from one to about four carbon atoms. In at least one process, ferrous ions are introduced for a separate leaching step. Additional steps include regeneration of the lixiviant cuprous ion solutions and removing a portion of the copper ions from the copper ion solution before or after the step of regenerating. Several processes for the regeneration are possible employing quinolic compounds, H.sub.2, CO or syngas as reductants.

The invention relates to a process for the recovery of valuable metals from sulfidic, silicate-containing raw materials by slurrying the raw material in water, by subjecting the slurry to a selective leach under atmospheric conditions and in an acidic milieu, and by separating the valuable-metal containing solution from the solid leach residue.When the leach is carried out by introducing an oxygen-bearing gas into the slurry which contains finely-divided sulfide and carbon, the acidity of the slurry drops in a controlled manner so that a high efficiency of oxygen, and a high selectivity of the leach as regards valuable metals, are obtained. Owing to the presence of carbon the oxygen is reduced very easily and so oxygen efficiency is high and the rate of dissolving of the valuable metals increases in the slurry mixture.
