Abstract: This invention provides an inventive tissue sampling probe which offers many advantages over probes available in the prior art. Unexpectedly superior results are obtained in connection with the retrieval of intact tissue specimens, because of a unique combination of cutting features, including, in particular, the employment of an electrosurgical cutting element which is extendible to permit ready severance of the distal end of the tissue specimen, without impact to surrounding tissue. Additionally, the inventive instrument is advantageously designed so that portions of the instrument which contact the patient's tissue or fluid discharge (i.e. blood) during a procedure are modular and disposable, to permit ready replacement of those portions with a new module for an ensuing procedure, without the necessity of cleaning and sterilizing the instrument. The versatility of the invention permits its use in many applications, including, for example, breast biopsies, intraoperative staging, laparoscopic surgery, and lymphadenectomy procedures.

Abstract: A four-wheel drive torque transfer mechanism splits torque from the transmission gearing section of a vehicle into a front-wheel torque and a rear-wheel torque, transmitting the front-wheel torque to the front-wheel drive shafts and the rear-wheel torque to the rear-wheel drive shafts. A central differential connected to the transmission gearing section distributes the torque from the transmission gearing section. A central differential limiting mechanism, provided between the input and output sides of the central differential, limits the rotary differential operation of the differential arrangement responsive to a control torque signal. Control gain values representing optimized turning characteristics are calculated for each of the turning conditions of the vehicle and stored in a memory. A controller for controlling the differential limiting mechanism reads the control gain values from the memory and calculates the products of detected turning conditions and the control gain values corresponding thereto. The controller further calculates the sum of the products and generates the control torque signal in accordance with that calculated sum.

Abstract: A device is made up of an active structure attached to a substrate, the active structure having a facet through which light couples between the active structure and another structure attached to the substrate; and an active region comprising a quantum well region that includes a sub-region, adjacent the facet, configured to undergo QWI in response to heat. The active structure also contains a heating element, positioned close to the facet and operable such that heat generated by the heating element raises a temperature of the sub-region of the active region near the facet high enough to activate QWI in that sub-region, in turn causing a reduction in optical absorption, without raising temperatures in any other portion of the active region enough to cause significant thermal stress at any interface between the substrate and the active structure.
