Abstract: Hybrid organic/inorganic coating compositions of nanometer thickness are described, where the organic layer is a clay-containing layer comprising a clay and a hydrophilic polymer and the inorganic layer is a metal-containing layer comprising a metal with a refractive index greater than 1.5, where the coating compositions allow for the generation and tenability of iridescent color through control of the coat thickness.

Abstract: A core-shell microneedle system and a method of manufacturing the microneedle system provides a pulsatile drug delivery system which is programmed to release drugs/vaccines at predictable times using biodegradable polymers and with controllable dosages. This microneedle system can be fully embedded into the skin and then release drugs/vaccines as sharp bursts in a timely manner, similar to multiple bolus injections.

Abstract: Porous, electrically conductive ceramic foams incorporating continuous self-assembled graphene networks are described. The disclosed approach uses interfacial trapping to spontaneously exfoliate and assemble pristine graphite, not graphite oxide, in a ceramic sol-gel. The composite foams display electrical conductivity and joule heating, with anticipated applications as, for example, catalyst supports, thermoelectrics, and porous electrodes.

A tinnitus treatment may include one or more of an biological feedback with the patient, transcranial magnetic stimulation of the patient, surgical insertion of the cochlear implant, the cognitive behavioral therapy, the transcutaneous electrical stimulation, pharmacologic therapy on the patient, or applying a hearing aid to the patient.

Abstract: The present disclosure provides advantageous graphene/graphite stabilized composites (e.g., graphene/graphite stabilized emulsion-templated foam composites), and improved methods for fabricating such graphene/graphite stabilized composites. More particularly, the present disclosure provides improved methods for fabricating pristine, graphene/graphite/polymer composite foams derived from emulsions stabilized by graphene/graphite kinetic trapping. In exemplary embodiments, the present disclosure provides that, instead of viewing the insolubility of pristine graphene/graphite as an obstacle to be overcome, it is utilized as a means to create or fabricate water/oil emulsions, with graphene/graphite stabilizing the spheres formed. These emulsions are then the frameworks used to make foam composites that have shown bulk conductivities up to about 2 S/m, as well as compressive moduli up to about 100 MPa and breaking strengths of over 1200 psi, with densities as low as about 0.25 g/cm3.

Abstract: A method for manufacturing a coating includes dissolving at least one salt in a mixture of water and ethanol to form a precursor solution, adding an additive to the precursor solution to form a fuel solution, and injecting the fuel solution into a plasma flame. The additive includes at least one of urea or ammonium acetate. The additive functions as a fuel to increase a temperature of the plasma flame. The method further includes manufacturing the coating on a substrate. The coating includes a garnet structure including a predetermined amount of yttrium-aluminum, one or more first cracks extending completely through a thickness of the coating, and a porosity greater than ten volume percent.

Abstract: Provided are polymers, which may be crosslinked to form a main-chain liquid crystalline (LC) hydrogel with a three-dimensional network. Also provided are methods of using the hydrogel as a substrate for tissue culture. For example, the hydrogel may organize into LC phases and encapsulate a plurality of cells within its polymeric network. In some embodiments, human stem cells are cultured using the present method with good viability and demonstrate faster proliferation in the present LC hydrogel compared to a non-LC gel.
