Carbonaceous feeds such as hydrocarbonaceous oils and coal are hydroconverted in the presence of a combination of a hydrogen halide and a metal-containing catalyst produced in situ in the feed. The hydrogen halide is present in an amount to provide from about 0.1 to 20 moles of hydrogen halide per atom of the metal constituent of the catalyst to increase the activity of the catalyst.

A process for the synthesis of catalysts by pre-forming a porous refractory inorganic oxide support, or carrier from a coarse particulate solid, preferably an alumina extrudate, contacting said preformed support with an acid solution, and then treating, contacting and neutralizing said preformed acid treated support with a base prior to the impregnation of said neutralized support with a metal, or metals, hydrogenation-dehyrdogenation component. The preformed solid support ranges at least about 1/32 inch diameter, and preferably at least about 1/16 inch diameter, and larger.

A catalyst constituted of a composite which includes hydrogenation-dehydrogenation components comprised of platinum and rhenium to which a small amount of copper is added to suppress hydrogenolysis, which is particularly acute in reforming during the early period of operation when the catalyst is placed on stream, i.e., at the startup of a reactor; and process of employing such catalyst in reforming.
Abstract:
A process for the simultaneous desulfurization and hydroconversion of heavy carbonaceous feeds, including various sulfur-containing heavy petroleum oils, is disclosed. These feedstocks are contacted with potassium sulfide in a conversion zone maintained at elevated temperatures and in the presence of added hydrogen. In this manner, the feeds are substantially desulfurized, and significant upgrading of these feeds is also obtained as demonstrated by decreased Conradson carbon, increased API gravity, and the conversion of substantial portion of the 1,050.degree. F.+ portion of these feeds. In a preferred embodiment, such a process is disclosed employing a combination of potassium sulfide and sodium sulfide, and in particular these processes include procedures for the regeneration of the sulfides and their recycle to the conversion zone.

Disclosed is a process for opening naphthenic rings of naphthenic ring-containing compounds, along with catalysts which can be used in that process. The ring opening is accomplished using a ring opening catalyst system which combines an Ir ring opening catalyst with a Pt and Pd catalyst. The combination of the Pt and Pd-containing catalyst with an Ir-containing catalyst incorporates desirable isomerization activity and also results in substantial ring opening activity that enables Ir to be loaded at a level that is substantially below that of Ir-only ring opening processes.

A process for the hydrodesulfurization (HDS) of multiple condensed ring heterocyclic organosulfur compounds present in petroleum and petrochemical streams and the saturation of aromatics over noble metal-containing catalysts under relatively mild conditions. The noble metal is selected from Pt, Pd, Ir, Rh and polymetallics thereof. The catalyst system also contains a hydrogen sulfide sorbent material.
