Improved quantum efficiency may be obtained by further doping with Gd3+. Refined rules for designing quantum-splitting phosphors include the requirement of incorporation of Gd3+ and Mn2+ in the host lattice for facilitation of energy migration.

There is provided a blue-green illumination system, comprising a light emitting diode, and a luminescent material having emission CIE color coordinates located within an area of a of a pentagon on a CIE chromaticity diagram, whose corners have the following CIE color coordinates: i) x=0.0137 and y=0.4831; ii) x=0.2240 and y=0.3890; iii) x=0.2800 and y=0.4500; iv) x=0.2879 and y=0.5196; and v) x=0.0108 and y=0.7220. The light emitting diode may be a UV LED and the luminescent material may be a Ba2SiO4:Eu2+ phosphor, a Ba2(Mg,Zn)Si2O7:Eu2+ phosphor and/or a Ba2Al2O4:Eu2+ phosphor. The illumination system may be used as the green light of a traffic light or an automotive display.

In accordance with one aspect of the present invention, a phosphor precursor composition is provided. The phosphor precursor composition includes gamma alumina, strontium oxide precursor, europium oxide precursor, and an alkaline earth metal precursor other than strontium oxide precursor which affords a phosphor having a formula selected from the group consisting of Sr4Al14O25:Eu2+, Sr4-a-zAaEUzAl14O25, and combinations thereof upon thermal treatment at a temperature above 800° C., wherein A is an alkaline earth metal other than strontium, 0≦a 0. Another aspect of the present invention provides a phosphor composition. Also provided in another aspect of the invention is a method of making the phosphor and a lighting apparatus including the phosphor.

A blue persistent phosphor composition is provided, along with methods for making and using the composition. More specifically, in one embodiment, the phosphor includes a material having a formula of A3M10-xC1+x(O20-xNx):Eu, RE wherein A may be Ba, Sr, Ca, K, Na or a combination thereof, M may be Al, B, Zn, Co, Ga, Sc or a combination thereof, and C may be Si or Ge or a combination thereof; x is between 0.001 and 5.0; and RE is Dy, Nd, Er, Ho, Tm, Yb, Sm or a combination thereof. Beneficial embodiments use Sr, Si and a combination of Al and B to produce phosphors that are blue in color and have a slower rate of decay. In another embodiment, methods are provided for making persistent phosphors having the formulations above. Other embodiments provide applications for such a phosphor, including uses in toys, emergency equipment, clothing, and instrument panels, among others.
