Abstract: Durable and scratch resistant articles including low-reflectance optical coating with gradient portion. In some embodiments, an article comprises: a substrate comprising a first major surface; and an optical coating disposed over the first major surface. The optical coating comprises: a second major surface; a thickness; and a first gradient portion. A refractive index of the optical coating varies along a thickness of the optical coating. The difference between the maximum refractive index of the first gradient portion and the minimum refractive index of the first gradient portion is 0.05 or greater. The absolute value of the slope of the refractive index of the first gradient portion is 0.1/nm or less everywhere along the thickness of the first gradient portion. The article exhibits a single side photopic average light reflectance of 3% or less, and a maximum hardness from 10 GPa to 30 GPa.

Abstract: A window for a sensing system is provided. The window includes a substrate having a predetermined thickness and an index of refraction for electromagnetic radiation having a wavelength of 905 nm and a layered film disposed on the substrate, the layered film including alternating layers of a high refractive index material and a lower refractive index material, the high refractive index material having a higher refractive index than the lower refractive index material, wherein each layer of the alternating layers of the layered film has a thickness, and the thicknesses of the alternating layers are configured so that the window has a transmittance of at least 80% for electromagnetic radiation having a wavelength within the range of 850 nm to 950 nm. The window further includes a hardness of at least 10 GPa, at the layered film, as measured by the Berkovich Indenter Hardness Test.

Abstract: A transparent article is described herein that includes: a glass-ceramic substrate comprising first and second primary surfaces opposing one another and a crystallinity of at least 40% by weight; and an optical film structure disposed on the first primary surface. The optical film structure comprises a plurality of alternating high refractive index (RI) and low RI layers and a scratch-resistant layer. The article also exhibits an average photopic transmittance of greater than 80% and a maximum hardness of greater than 10 GPa, as measured by a Berkovich Hardness Test over an indentation depth range from about 100 nm to about 500 nm. The glass-ceramic substrate comprises an elastic modulus of greater than 85 GPa and a fracture toughness of greater than 0.8 MPa·√m. Further, the optical film structure exhibits a residual compressive stress of ≥700 MPa and an elastic modulus of ≥140 GPa.

Abstract: A window for a sensing system is provided. The window includes a substrate, a layered film disposed on a first surface of the substrate, the layered film including alternating layers of higher refractive index materials and lower refractive index materials, wherein the refractive index of the higher refractive index materials is greater than the refractive index of the lower refractive index materials, and a maximum hardness, measured at the layered film and by the Berkovich Indenter Hardness Test, of at least 8 GPa. The window has: an average percentage transmittance of greater than 75% for electromagnetic radiation having a wavelength of 1550 nm at normal or near normal incidence; and an average percentage reflectance of less than 10% for electromagnetic radiation having a wavelength of 1550 nm at any angle of incidence within the range of 0° to 8°.

Abstract: One or more aspects of the disclosure pertain to an article including a film disposed on a glass substrate, which may be strengthened, where the interface between the film and the glass substrate is modified, such that the article retains its average flexural strength, and the film retains key functional properties for its application. Some key functional properties of the film include optical, electrical and/or mechanical properties. The bridging of a crack from one of the film or the glass substrate into the other of the film or the glass substrate can be prevented by inserting a crack mitigating layer between the glass substrate and the film.

Abstract: Embodiments of an enclosure including a substrate having an anti-fingerprint surface are disclosed. The anti-fingerprint surface may include a textured surface, a coated surface or a coated textured surface that exhibits a low fingerprint visibility, when a fingerprint is applied to the anti-fingerprint surface. In one or more embodiments, the enclosure exhibits any one of the following attributes (1) radio, and microwave frequency transparency, as defined by a loss tangent of less than 0.03 and at a frequency range of between 15 MHz to 3.0 GHz; (2) infrared transparency; (3) a fracture toughness of greater than 0.6 MPa·m1/2; (4) a 4-point bend strength of greater than 350 MPa; (5) a Vickers hardness of at least 450 kgf/mm2 and a Vickers median/radial crack initiation threshold of at least 5 kgf; (6) a Young's Modulus in the range from about 50 GPa to about 100 GPa; and (7) a thermal conductivity of less than 2.0 W/m° C.

The one or more interrupting layers includes a microstructure different than one of the first and second portions and the coating has an average optical transmittance greater than about 10% over the visible wavelength range from about 450 nm to about 650 nm.
