    摘要: A magnetic recording head for use in perpendicular magnetic recording having a design that allows the write coil to be manufactured by a damascene process for increased coil pitch and reduced coil resistance. The magnetic write head includes a photoresist dam structure that allows a hard baked photoresist to be formed that does not extend to the air bearing surface (ABS). Since the photoresist dam prevents the hard baked photoresist from reaching the ABS, the a damascene process, in which the hard baked photoresist remains in the finished write head, can be used to produce the write head. The use of such a damascene process advantageously allows the space between the coil turns to be reduced, which maximizes the number of turns that can be used and also maximizes the number width to which the coil turns can be constructed, thereby minimizing the electrical resistance of the write coil.

    摘要: A slider structure that allows a grounded heater element to be employed, while also allowing a decision of whether the slider is to be an “up” slider or a “down” slider to be made in a late stage in the formation of the slider. The slider includes electrical contact pads for making electrical connection with the heater element. The slider also includes a dedicated ground path formed on the slider body at a location that is removed from either of the first and second contact pads, ground path providing electrical connectivity to the slider body. At a late stage in the manufacture of the read and write head, a determination can be made as to which contact pad is to be a ground pad, and that pad can be electrically connected with the ground path.

    摘要: The present invention is an integral magnetic head suspension and method for making the same. The integral suspension, with or without the head, contains integrated conductive circuits that have multiple cross overs for noise reduction. The suspension is fabricated completely on silicon (Si) wafers using semiconductor processes. A N+ silicon layer is disposed over a P- silicon wafer. The N+ silicon layer and the P- silicon water are thermally oxidized to generate a bottom silicon oxide layer opposite the N+ layer side of the wafer and a top silicon oxide layer on the N+ side of the wafer, and to drive the N+ silicon into the P- silicon wafer. A layer of polysilicon is disposed over the silicon oxide layer on top of the N+ silicon layer. One or more pairs of conductive traces having multiple cross-overs are fabricated on the layer of polysilicon. Optimally, a magnetic head is simultaneously fabricated on the suspension. The polysilicon layer is then patterned to define the head structure and suspension structure as one piece. Finally, the magnetic head and suspension are separated from the wafer by removing the first silicon oxide layer by a chemical etchant and the P- silicon wafer by selective etching. The head and suspension are released from the silicon wafer as a single structure using the above-described semiconductor processes. Accordingly, no grinding or cutting is used to define the dimensions of the head. Further, no processes are required to attach the head to the suspension and the suspension can be made from low mass materials such as silicon (Si) or Al.sub.2 O.sub.3.
