Abstract: A liquid crystal light control device includes a first liquid crystal cell, a second liquid crystal cell overlapping the first liquid crystal cell, a third liquid crystal cell overlapping the second liquid crystal cell, and a fourth liquid crystal cell overlapping the third liquid crystal cell. Each of the first, second, third, and the fourth liquid crystal cells includes, a first substrate including a first alignment film, a second substrate including an electrode having a strip pattern and a second alignment film, and a liquid crystal layer between the first substrate and the second substrate. An alignment direction of the first alignment film and an alignment direction of the second alignment film are aligned to intersect each other. A longitudinal direction of the strip pattern of the electrode having the strip pattern is arranged to intersect an alignment direction of the second alignment film.

Abstract: According to one embodiment, a display device includes a display panel, a light source, a light guide and a prism sheet. The display panel includes a display area in which unit pixels each containing first sub-pixels and second sub-pixels are arranged along a first direction and a second direction. In the display area, the first sub-pixels have a width different from that of the second sub-pixel in at least one of the first direction and the second direction, or each unit pixel contains different numbers of first sub-pixels and second sub-pixels. The prism sheet is interposed between the light guide and the display panel and includes prisms extending along a third direction inclined with respect to the second direction by an acute angle of inclination.

Abstract: A signal processor of a display device includes: a light emission value calculating unit that calculates a light emission value; a chunk determining unit that determines whether pixels within a predetermined luminance value range are continuously present and determines an area of the continuous pixels as a chunk; a maximum luminance value detecting unit that detects a maximum luminance value inside the chunk in one of the partial areas; a luminance gain value determining unit that determines a luminance gain value based on the maximum luminance value such that a corrected light emission value that is a value acquired by multiplying the light emission value by the luminance gain value is a value of an upper limit emission value or less; and a light emission control unit that causes the light source units to emit light based on the corrected light emission value.

Abstract: A display device includes a signal processing unit that receives input signals, and calculates output signals to a first sub-pixel, a second sub-pixel, a third sub-pixel, and a fourth sub-pixel. The signal processing unit calculates a frequency of pixels belonging to each of a plurality of partitions using a light quantity of a surface light source. The signal processing unit calculates an index value for each of the partitions by at least multiplying the cumulative frequency being obtained by sequentially adding the frequency of pixels from a partition having the maximum light quantity among the partitions, and the number of partitions representing a position of a partition to which the cumulative frequency belongs counted from the partition having the maximum light quantity. The signal processing unit controls luminance of the surface light source based on a partition in which the index value exceeds a threshold.
