The groove structure is wobbled in a radial direction of the medium and the track is divided into a plurality of units in the track direction by at least one radial boundary line formed by a dropout portion. Identification information is disposed in the track at a head of each recording unit at the dropout portion and the medium is divided into a plurality of zones in a radial direction with a length of a circular arc being substantially the same between the zones in a circumferential direction. At least two adjacent units in the radial direction of the medium comprise one zone. The method includes providing the optical medium, and recording information on the optical medium by irradiating an optical spot thereon.

Each track is divided into a plurality of recording and radially adjacent recording units of a respective zone are delimited by a pair of radial lines joined to form a central angle at an apex proximate to a center of the disk-like substrate. The grooves are wobbled in the radial direction of the disk-like substrate with a length of each recording unit being an integer multiple of a cycle of the wobble, and the integer multiple being the same for the different zones. An optical spot is irradiated on the optical medium, a reflected beam from the optical medium is detected, and information on the optical medium is reproduced by using a signal obtained by the reflected beam.

According to this invention, since the range of power necessary for erasing an overwritable magneto-optical recording medium is set to 2.5 mW or above, overwriting is possible without erase residue due to mark (magnetic domain) diameter difference, tracking offset, ambient temperature variation and characteristic dispersion between magneto-optical recording media and thus the magneto-optical recording medium has high reliability. Moreover, the rate of change, K of the switching field of the memory layer relative to temperature at around an erase start temperature can be controlled to be a constant value so that an erase power margin can be increased and that the tolerance to the reading light when the ambient temperature rises can be improved.

A disk cartridge and a disk device for receiving the disk cartridge to enable recording and/or reproducing of information from or on a disk housed within the disk cartridge. The disk cartridge includes a disk in which information is recorded and/or reproduced, a case for housing the disk which case has opposite faces including a window in a respective face for exposing a part of the disk therethrough. A shutter is mounted with respect to the case so as to open or close a window of a respective face of the case with the shutter being movable in opposite directions with respect to the window from a position in which the window is closed to a position in which the window is open. The disk cartridge may include an openable part of the case for enabling the disk to be taken in and out of the case through the openable part thereof and a discrimination arrangement for enabling discrimination of different types of disk cartridges from one another. The disk cartridge may be arranged to enable exchange of disks of a same or different format including CD (compact disk), DVD (digital video disk) and PD (phase change disk) and the discrimination arrangement enables prevention of a disk cartridge of one different type from being erroneously inserted into a disk device receiving apparatus which is not compatible for the different type of disk cartridge.
