Variable displacement compressor is provided with a displacement control valve (2) that can change an opening degree of supplying passage (44, 46) between a valve seat (VS) and a valve body (VB), thereby changing the pressure in a crank chamber (9). The displacement control valve (2) is accommodated within a control valve chamber (5c) in a rear housing (5) and fixed in place by means of a circlip (50). A cutout (50g) is formed between the displacement control valve (2) and the circlip (50) and/or between the circlip (50) and the rear housing (5). A clearance (C) formed by the cutout (50g) and the like inhibits the transmission of vibrations caused by impacts between the valve seat (VS) and the valve body (VB). This makes the variable displacement compressor quiet, reduces costs by obviating the need for additional components, and results in excellent durability.

To accurately detect a trouble of a magnetic brake (2) by eliminating any effect of a temperature of a location at which an elevator is installed, a temperature sensor (3) is arranged to measure a temperature of the magnetic brake (2). When an armature (2c) has been attracted responsive to a brake release command, the temperature of the magnetic brake is measured as a first temperature, and before the armature returns responsive to a brake actuation command, the temperature of the magnetic brake is measured as a second temperature. The first and second temperatures are compared with each other. When a result of the comparison between the first and second temperatures is determined to be greater than a predetermined value, the magnetic brake (2) is determined to have been locked and hence, to have developed a trouble.

A hollow rack shaft is produced by forming a plate work piece and has continuous metal flow along the contour of rack teeth surface without being cut. A series of wave-like concave-convex sections is formed on the inner surface of the shaft. Thickness of tooth body and tooth bottom of the rack teeth is adjusted by dimensions of the unevenness. Thereby, stress concentration at each point of the rack shaft is prevented and the shaft is strengthened and its weight reduced.
