An optical amplifier controlling method and optical amplifier system which are simple in composition, maintain the S/N ratio of an optical signal output, have high control responsiveness, suppress the generation of a light surge, and amplify the optical signal, and a system using the method and amplifier system. The optical amplifier system includes an optical amplifier unit which is supplied with energy by pumping light and amplifies with the supplied energy an optical signal inputted to the amplifier unit. The optical amplifier system includes a gain control unit for controlling the gain of the amplifier system depending on the strength of the optical signal inputted to the amplifier system such that the amplifier has a maximum gain at a predetermined value of the strength of the optical signal inputted in the optical amplifier system and an area of a positive gain of not more than the maximum gain for a strength of the optical signal of not more than the predetermined value.

An ion beam (113) focused into a diameter of at most 0.1 .mu.m bombards substantially perpendicularly to the superlattice layers of a one-dimensional superlattice structure and is scanned rectilinearly in a direction of the superlattice layers so as to form at least two parallel grooves (108, 109, 110, 111) or at least two parallel impurity-implanted parts (2109) as potential barrier layers, whereby a device of two-dimensional superlattice structure can be manufactured. At least two parallel grooves (114, 115, 116, 117) or impurity-implanted parts are further formed orthogonally to the potential barrier layers of the two-dimensional superlattice structure, whereby a device of three-dimensional superlattice structure can be manufactured. In addition, deposition parts (2403, 2404, 2405) may well be provided by further depositing an insulator into the grooves (108, 109, 110, 111, 114, 115, 116, 117) which are formed by the scanning of the ion beam. Owing to these expedients, the portions of the two-dimensional and three-dimensional superlattice structures can be manufactured with ease and at high precision.

An optical device and an optical integrated circuit which incorporate an optical switch and have a novel function. Light sources are respectively coupled to two input ends of an X-type 2.times.2 optical switch, and light receivers are respectively coupled to two output ends of the optical switch, thereby obtaining an optical device which is capable of performing both AND and OR logics. A light source is coupled to one input end of an optical switch, and a light receiver is provided at one output end from which the light emitted from the light source emerges when no electric power is supplied to the optical switch, whereby it is possible to construct a system in which, even when one terminal has a power failure, there is no hindrance to other terminals. If an optical switch is arranged such as to use driving electric power as a modulating signal, the optical switch can serve as a modulator in which the output from one output end can be employed to monitor a modulated optical signal. In addition, if the optical switch is formed into, e.g., a carrier injection type optical switch using a semiconductor, the above-described devices can be fabricated as integrated circuit.
