An approach is provided for generating a depth indication map from an image. The generation is performed using a mapping relating input data in the form of input sets of image spatial positions and a combination of color coordinates of pixel values associated with the image spatial positions to output data in the form of depth indication values. The mapping is generated from a reference image and a corresponding reference depth indication map. Thus, a mapping from the image to a depth indication map is generated on the basis of corresponding reference images. The approach may be used for prediction of depth indication maps from images in an encoder and decoder. In particular, it may be used to generate predictions for a depth indication map allowing a residual image to be generated and used to provide improved encoding of depth indication maps.

The video compression scheme introduces a number of various video enhancement techniques on the base layer. A picture analyzer is used to determine the best or the best mix of various video enhancement 5 techniques. The picture analyzer compares the selected mix of video enhancement techniques with the original full resolution input signal to determine for which of the pixels or groups of pixels a residual enhancement layer is required. Parameters defining the selected mix of video enhancement techniques are transmitted to the decoder layer so the same mix of video enhancement techniques can be used in the decoder layer.

The video stream is downsampled to reduce the resolution of the video stream. The downsampled video stream is encoded to produce a base stream. The base stream is decoded and upconverted to produce a reconstructed video stream. The reconstructed video stream is subtracted from the video stream to produce a residual stream. The resulting residual stream is encoded in an enhancement encoder and outputs an enhancement stream. The residual signal in selected frames is muted in the enhancement encoder while the motion information in the frame is maintained.

Transform coefficients corresponding to higher frequencies are attenuated more than coefficients corresponding to lower frequencies. For attenuating higher-frequency coefficients, the invention provides a curve (QC) with higher quantization step-size (QADD) for transform coefficients (Ci) corresponding to higher frequencies. Because this additional quantization step size (QADD) is put in the resulting bit-stream, the reconstruction is performed with an original quantization step-size, without taking the additional quantizing into account. Therefore, a reconstructed coefficient will have a lower value than an original coefficient (Ci). Bit rates can easily be regulated by shifting the curve (QC) to lower or higher frequencies and/or multiplying the curve (QC).

In a method and apparatus for encoding an input video bitstream to produce an encoded output bitstream, a base stream is enhanced based on enhancement control parameters. At least one picture content parameter is extracted from the enhanced base stream. At least one picture content parameter is extracted from the input video bitstream. The enhanced picture content parameters are compared with the input picture content parameters. An output from the comparison step is received and the enhancement control parameters are calculated so as to minimize the difference between the input picture content parameters and the enhanced picture content parameters. The calculated control parameters are incorporated into the encoded output bitstream.
