A phase change optical recording medium includes a phase change optical recording layer which transits between two states of the crystalline state and the amorphous state when irradiated with light, and a heat adjustment layer which is formed adjacent to the phase change optical recording layer and abruptly increases or decreases thermal conductivity with increasing temperature upon irradiation of recording light. This phase change optical recording medium can decrease the size of the recording mark and makes high-density recording possible.
