First servo pattern areas including portions provided with magnetic members and portions provided with no magnetic members are provided on the first surface. The magnetic members of the first and second servo pattern areas are magnetized in a direction perpendicular to the first and second surfaces. An embodiment of this system comprises a magnetic disk of a perpendicular recording type, including a soft magnetic backing layer and a magnetic recording layer of a perpendicular magnetic anisotropy formed on the backing layer, and a magnetic head for writing or reading of data with respect to the magnetic disk, wherein the magnetic head comprises (a) a pair of main magnetic poles each of which made of a material having a high magnetic permeability, one end of the each pole being located so as to face the magnetic disk surface, (b) a non-magnetic interlayer provided between two main magnetic poles of the pair, (c) a recording coil disposed so as to generate a magnetic flux passing through the magnetic disk via the main magnetic poles, and (d) an MR element provided via an insulation layer on the other ends of the pair of main magnetic poles, one MR element having a film surface parallel to end surfaces of the other ends of the main magnetic poles, and being magnetically coupled with the pair of main magnetic poles.

Disclosed is a perpendicular magnetic recording medium, comprising a nonmagnetic substrate, a longitudinal hard magnetic multi-layered film arranged on the nonmagnetic substrate, including a nonmagnetic intermediate layer and a pair of hard magnetic layers laminated one upon the other with the nonmagnetic intermediate layer interposed therebetween, and having at least two hard magnetic layers, a longitudinal soft magnetic layer formed on the longitudinal hard magnetic multi-layered film, and a perpendicular magnetic recording layer formed on the longitudinal soft magnetic layer. The perpendicular magnetic recording medium of the particular construction is capable of suppressing noise and achieves a high recording magnetic field intensity and a high recording resolution.
