A method of conforming non-ductile flakes to a surface is provided wherein a surface is coated with the non-ductile flakes. A first step of coating at least a portion of the surface with a coating of adhesive or a paint is required and subsequently before the coating cures a plurality of thin film flakes having a non-ductile insulating or semiconductor layer are sprinkled upon the adhesive or paint while it is still tacky. Typically the thin-film flakes have a thickness of between 50 nm and 2,000 nm, and have a length of between 2 microns and 200 microns. The flakes having a non-ductile layer are then burnished upon the surface so as to provide an active layer, which conforms to the surface.

One exemplary method utilizes spectra representative of the electromagnetic radiation received from the object at one or more angles. The slope direction of the spectra is compared against reference data that represents spectra for an authentic object.

A color-shifting paint comprising a polymeric paint medium and a plurality of colored interference thin film platelets dispersed in the paint medium. Each platelet being characterized in that platelets has first and second generally planar outer surfaces and an edge thickness perpendicular to the first and second generally planar outer surfaces. Each platelet is comprised of a metal reflecting layer having first and second surfaces. A multilayer interference structure is disposed on each of the first and second surfaces of the metal reflecting layer to provide a symmetrical platelet. The multilayer interference thin film structure comprises a pair of layer consisting of a dielectric layer formed of a dielectric material and a semi-opaque layer. with the dielectric layer directly adjacent to the metal reflecting layer. The thickness of the dielectric layer determines the color and the dielectric material determines the degree of color shift. The platelets have an aspect ratio of at least 2:1 for the longest planar dimension of the first and second outer surfaces in comparison to the edge thickness of the platelets, and have a maximum dimension on any of said surfaces ranging from 2-200 microns.

Interference pigment flakes and foils are provided which have luminescent and color-shifting properties. The pigment flakes can have a symmetrical coating structure on opposing sides of a core layer, can have an asymmetrical coating structure with all of the layers on one side of the core layer, or can be formed with encapsulating coatings around the core layer. The coating structure of the flakes and foils includes a core layer, a dielectric layer overlying the core layer, and an absorber layer overlying the dielectric layer. A luminescent material is incorporated into the flakes or foils as a separate layer or as at least part of one or more of the other layers. The pigment flakes and foils exhibit a discrete color shift so as to have a first color at a first angle of incident light or viewing and a second color different from the first color at a second angle of incident light or viewing. The pigment flakes can be interspersed into liquid media such as paints or inks to produce colorant materials for subsequent application to objects or papers. The foils can be laminated to various objects or can be formed on a carrier substrate.
