The rotation of the viewer's head is detected by means of piezo-electric vibration gyroscopes 405 and 406, and the coefficient for setting the amount of change in the camera system's image shooting direction with reference to the detected direction is changed in accordance with the focal length of the camera system's zoom lens systems. An image taken by a mobile camera is displayed on a head-mounted display provided with an acceleration sensor to detect movement of the observer's head, and the size of the image viewed by the observer wearing the display is varied according to the movement of the observer's head. For varying the image size, the camera is equipped with a zoom lens to change the size of shooting area, or alternatively, the display is equipped with a zoom lens as the eyepiece to enlarge or reduce the size of the displayed image. An image showing the appearance of the camera is displayed being superimposed on the image taken by the camera in order to facilitate the control of the camera by the observer.

An HMD is provided with two piezoelectric vibrating gyros which detect vertical and horizontal angular velocities, and a horizontal sensor which detects a vertical angle. While the user's head rotates, shooting direction of a three-dimensional camera is varied in accordance with the angles obtained by integration of the detected angular velocities. While the head is stationary, the obtained vertical angle and the output of the gyro is corrected based on the angle detected by the horizontal sensor. The shooting direction of the camera can be manually set irrespective of the direction of the head, and information on the viewing direction is displayed together with a taken image.

A spherical image with its center of curvature in the vicinity of the pupil is reflected at the second and the first spherical semitransparent reflecting surfaces and is then directed to the viewer's pupil.

In a reflective LCD, a liquid crystal element has a back surface reflection light reducer. The back surface reflection light reducer may be a back surface reflection prevention coating provided on the air-side surface of a liquid crystal sealing base member as a second base member, or may be an inclined surface which is the air-side surface of the second base member inclined relative to the reflective surface of the LCD. When the back surface reflection light reducer is a back surface reflection prevention coating, the image light emerging from white-displaying pixels is hardly reflected on a back surface in the liquid crystal sealing base member, is extracted through the liquid crystal sealing base member to the air side, and is directed through an observation optical system to the optical pupil. Thus, even with a construction in which image light emerging in an oblique direction from the reflective surface of the reflective LCD is directed through an axis-asymmetric observation optical system to an observer's eye, it is possible to prevent a lowering in the contrast of the displayed image due to back surface reflection.
