    摘要: A stereoscopic image display system includes an image display screen for displaying images; a controller and a display driver circuit for causing left-eye images and right-eye images to be produced on the display screen in a format of image components which at any particular time define a left-eye image field interlaced with a right-eye image field; a shutter system having variable transparency shutter components positioned in front of the image display screen for defining a viewing position on the opposite side of the shutter system from the display screen. The transparency of the shutter components is controlled to attenuate the left-eye image field from view by the right eye of a viewer at the viewing position, to attenuate the right-eye image field from view by the left eye of the viewer, to enable view of the left-eye image field by the left eye of the viewer, and to enable view of the right-eye image field by the right eye of the viewer. The image components that define the left-eye image field are periodically interchanged with the image components that define the right-eye image field, and the respective transparencies of the shutter components are interchanged when the image components are interchanged so that each eye views an image having twice the resolution as would otherwise be provided. The shutter system includes a plurality of parallel arrays of variable transmittance elements for composing the shutter components.

For varying the image size, the camera is equipped with a zoom lens to change the size of shooting area, or alternatively, the display is equipped with a zoom lens as the eyepiece to enlarge or reduce the size of the displayed image. An image showing the appearance of the camera is displayed being superimposed on the image taken by the camera in order to facilitate the control of the camera by the observer.

    摘要: A three-dimensional (3-D) virtual display system for displaying a flicker-free 3-D virtual image to each of N viewers randomly dispersed about a horizontally disposed viewing screen, where N is an integer greater than 1, includes a laser projector for generating N.times.M image pairs responsive to a video signal comprising the N.times.M image pairs, N transmitters associated with respective ones of the N viewers, each of the N transmitters generating a unique coded pulse, a detector for determining the position of each of the N viewers relative to the viewing screen responsive to the respective unique coded pulse and for generating respective position data, a graphics processor for generating the video signal responsive to the position data, and N selectors associated with the N viewers for selecting the M image pairs out of the N.times.M image pairs allocated to each of the N viewers, respectively. The projector includes an electron-beam-pumped semiconductor laser (EBSL) screen, e.g., a vertical cavity surface emitting laser screen. In an exemplary case, the video signal carries in excess of 1000 image pairs per second, which is far beyond the capability of conventional cathode ray tubes (CRTs) to display. A method for generating N 3D virtual images and a corresponding video signal are also described.

    摘要: Apparatus and method for the alignment of images in which, typically, two perspective views are provided. The observer's head location is detected and each of the views is presented to the respectively correct eye to provide a stereoscopic image. A retro-reflective marker worn by the observer removes the need for the observer to wear special viewing devices, whilst providing an infrared imaging system with a way to locate the observer's head. Image content may be driven by the observer's viewpoint. The two perspectives may be presented simultaneously using conventional display elements. A tapered lenticular structure provides a way to adapt to changes in the observer's distance from the display. Alternatively, each perspective image may be rapidly sequenced, either as two complete single images, or a sequence of suitably arranged compositions of the two. The infrared source used in the head tracking apparatus is modulated to aid image processing. The modulated source may also be used to synchronize a stereoscopic viewing device, switching views on a field sequential basis. Inter alia, the invention has applications in minimally invasive surgery, remote handling, virtual reality, teleconferencing and computer aided design and visualization.

    摘要: A field sequential color illumination system for liquid crystal displays is described which focuses light from a plurality of small point like or line like light sources into subregions of pixels of an LCD by a fly's eye lens, in such a manner that at any given time, red, blue, and green light spots are focused simultaneously into different pixels. Furthermore, during each subsequent field, light spots are focused into different sub sections of each pixel in such a way that each pixel receives red, green, and blue illumination sequentially during each set of three fields. During each field, each pixel is addressed and made to display the appropriate transmittance level to display the appropriate red, green, or blue color level for its location on the red, blue, or green color component of the image just prior to illumination of a sub region by a red, green, or blue light source.
