An optically active 7-substituted-1,4-dioxepan-5-one derivative represented by the general formula (I): ##STR1## wherein R represents an alkyl group having from 1 to 5 carbon atoms; and * means an asymmetric carbon atom, is disclosed. An optically active polymer represented by formula (II): ##STR2## wherein R and * are as defined above; and n is an integer of 25 or more, obtained by ring opening polymerization of the optically active 7-substituted-1,4-dioxepan-5-one derivative represented by formula (I) is also disclosed. A process for producing the optically active polymer represented by formula (II) is further disclosed, comprising subjecting an optically active 7-substituted-1,4-dioxepan-5-one derivative represented by formula (I) to ring opening polymerization in the presence of at least one catalyst selected from the group consisting of (i) an organotin compound, (ii) an organoaluminum compound and water, and (iii) an organozinc compound and water.

An object of the present invention is to provide a method for manufacturing an optically active menthol having fewer steps, which generates less environmentally polluting waste because a catalytic reaction is involved in all of the steps, and is capable of saving a production cost. The present invention relates to a method for manufacturing an optically active menthol, including the following steps: A-1) asymmetrically hydrogenating at least one of geranial and neral to thereby obtain an optically active citronellal, B-1) conducting a ring-closure reaction of the optically active citronellal in the presence of an acid catalyst to thereby obtain an optically active isopulegol, and C-1) hydrogenating the optically active isopulegol to thereby obtain an optically active menthol.

An object of the present invention is to provide a novel monomer compound having a lactone structure which gives polymers having more excellent feature as resist material, etc. The present invention relates to a compound represented by the following formula [1]: wherein R1 and R2 are an alkyl group; R3 and R4 are each independently hydrogen atom or an alkyl group; R5 is hydrogen atom, acryloyl group or methacryloyl group; and X is a methylene group which may have an alkyl group or an ethylene group which may have an alkyl group. The present invention provides a compound having a lactone structure which gives a polymer having more excellent feature particularly as a resist material and also provides a hydroxy lactone being useful as a material, etc. therefor.

A process for producing isopulegol, which comprises selectively cyclizing citronellal in the presence of a tris(2,6-diarylphenoxy)aluminum catalyst represented by the following general formula (3): wherein Al represents an aluminum atom, Ar1 and Ar2 each represent a substituted or unsubstituted aryl group or a heteroaryl group; and R1, R2 and R3 each represent a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, an alkyl group having 1 to 8 carbon atom(s), an alkoxy group having 1 to 8 carbon atom(s), a substituted or unsubstituted aryl group, a dialkylamino group having 1 to 4 carbon atom(s), or a nitro group.

Provided is citronellol, which has an elegant rosy fragrance and is extremely useful for fragrance impartation to aromatic articles. A mixture of an alkylamine and isoprene in a molar ratio of from 1:4 to 1:4.5 is subjected to telomerization at 80 to 100° C. for 2.5 to 3.5 hours in the presence of an alkyllithium catalyst and/or phenyllithium catalyst to obtain a nerylamine compound containing 2 to 10 wt % &agr;-nerylamine compound represented by general formula (4). From this nerylamine compound, citronellol containing 2 to 10 wt % optically active 3,7-dimethyl-7-octenol is produced through the reaction steps of asymmetric isomerization, hydrolysis, and hydrogenation.

A biodegradable complex fiber which retains excellent biodegradability and hydrolyzability and has high strength and high melting temperature suitable for practical use and a method for producing the biodegradable complex fiber are provided. The biodegradable complex fiber comprises at least one polymer material selected from the group consisting of a polyglycolic acid, a poly(glycolic acid-co-lactic acid) and polylactic acid as a core component or as a shell component and a polymer material of poly(3-hydroxybutyric acid) groups or a polymer material of an aliphatic polyester consisting of a dibasic acid and a diol as a shell component or as a core component. The method comprises producing the biodegradable complex fiber by melt spinning.

A perfume-containing controlled release biodegradable resin composition which can release aroma of the included perfume gradually without changing its perfume tone and can be used in such applications as deodorants, etc. The resin composition includes a biodegradable resin which is a random or block copolymer polyester represented by the following formula (1): ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 is a hydrocarbon radical having 1 to 15 carbon atoms, which is a divalent organic group that may be have a double bond or an oxygen atom but does not have a group represented by the formula ##STR2## wherein the symbol "*" is an asymmetric carbon atom. Each of m and n is 0 or an integer of 100 to 9,000, provided that m+n is within the range of 200 to 10,000. The molar ratio of the structural units [I] and [II] is 1-99:99-1 when m and n are not 0 and the number average molecular weight is 5,000 to 1,000,000, and a perfume such as a cyclic ether, a natural plant perfume, etc., is held in the biodegradable resin.

An optically active block polyester copolymer formed of structural units represented by the following general formulas (I) and (II): ##STR1## wherein represents for an asymmetric carbon atom and m and n each represents a natural number in the range of from 300 to 5000 is obtained by subjecting an optically active butyrolactone and a species of lactone other than the optically active butyrolactone to sequential ringopening copolymerization in the presence of a catalyst. This optically active block polyester copolymer possesses a high molecular weight and a high melting point (not less than 130.degree. C.) and forms a biodegradable and hydrolyzable material of high strength capable of tolerating the impacts of actual use.
