摘要: A process for improving the impact resistance of a coated plastic substrate, particularly those polymers having a high refractive index, comprising applying an aqueous polyurethane dispersion as a primer layer to at least one surface of the plastic substrate, at least partially curing the aqueous polyurethane dispersion by air drying at ambient temperature, applying a coating composition over the polyurethane primer layer, and curing the coating composition to form an abrasion resistant hard coat. Preferably, the aqueous polyurethane dispersion is air dried at ambient temperature for less than one hour before application of the abrasion resistant coating composition. The process provides an impact enhancing, abrasion resistant coating system having strong interfacial adhesion that is preferably transparent for application onto preferably transparent plastic articles, such as ophthalmic lenses and safety eye wear.

摘要: Carbon fiber mats are embedded in a coating by first rolling on a coating of e.g. epoxy on the floor or wall, then applying sheets of fine carbon fibers, (optionally) removing the carbon fiber which is not adherent after the coating has dried, then applying one or more additional top coats of coating to additionally embed the carbon fibers. The result is an electrically conductive floor and/or wall coating system useful in antistatic rooms such as clean rooms, operating rooms, etc. Coatings can be solvent based or waterborne urethanes, epoxies, alkyds, polyethylenes, acrylics, vinyls, vinyl acetates, esters, polyesters, sulfones, polysulfones, silicones, polysilicones and others. The preferred mats are carbon fiber "veils" or "paper" generally having a density of about 0.75 oz./square yard.

摘要: An improved composite coating system for coating foam resin articles, including a formulation for a base coat together with a formulation for a top coat which bonds while to the surface of the base coat to form the composite. The base coat formulation is a water-based vinyl resin together with a slow evaporating coalescent and plasticizer. The top coat utilizes a solvent-based vinyl resin together with aromatic and aliphatic solvents and plasticizers. Erucic acid base monoamides are utilized for achieving desirable slip properties in the finished top coating. In order to achieve the desirable properties of the composite coatings, the latex resin-based materials are selected from those having a low glass transition temperature such as between -20.degree. C. and about 20.degree. C.
