Abstract: An adjustable timing gear arrangement having an output shaft and a camshaft operable in timed relationship with the output shaft comprises a first rotatable drive member driven by the output shaft with a second rotatable drive member mounted on the camshaft and operably connected with the first drive member for rotation in timed relation therewith. The second drive member is mounted on the camshaft for rotation on a common axis with the second drive member and the camshaft and is secured thereto to fix the angular relationship of the members. The mounting permits limited relative angular rotation of the members when the members are not so secured. For adjusting the relative angular positions of the second drive member and the camshaft there is an assembly including an unthreaded, cylindrical stud extending from the camshaft into a radially extending slotted opening through the second drive member. The opening includes angularly spaced, parallel sides. An eccentric cam is freely rotatable on the cylindrical stud and closely fits between the parallel sides of the slotted opening. A tool receiving portion on the cam is arranged for permitting selected rotation of the cam to cause relative angular adjustment of the second drive member relative to the camshaft. The slotted opening and the eccentric cam have cooperating interengaging portions lying in a plane perpendicular to the axis of rotation of the camshaft for retaining the cam in the slotted opening while permitting free rotation of the cam relative to the second drive member.

Abstract: For providing cam timing, a sprocket wheel housed in a timing cover is attached to a cam shaft by means of an intermediate adjusting arm placed in a recess of the sprocket wheel. The adjusting arm is rigidly fixed to the cam shaft and moveably secured to the sprocket wheel. Adjustment of the relative angular positions of the sprocket wheel and the cam shaft is achieved by repositioning a screw in the adjusting arm which is inclined to the face of the sprocket wheel so as to facilitate its rotation without removal of the timing cover.

A gear-wheel 30 is adjustably mounted on a reduced diameter and flattened end portion 16 of a cam-shaft 10 by a soft steel washer 24 having an aperture 26 complementary to the end portion 16 and overlying a recess 44 on the gear-wheel 30 into which an edge portion of the washer is deformed by a bolt 48 passing through the gear-wheel. The gear-wheel and washer are retained axially on the shaft by a bolt 34 and washer 36. The head 50 of the bolt 48 is formed with arcuate recesses 52 adapted to abut the shaft 10. In Fig. 4 (not shown) the bolt 48 has a hexagonal head and is received in a screw threaded bore in the gear-wheel.
