A transmission device for providing positive geared, constant mesh, variable speed, rotary power transmission. The device includes a power drive shaft with an axially mounted, slidable drive gear. This drive gear is locked in rotational movement by means of an axial guide track fixed to the power drive shaft. A transmission drive shaft is fixed in oblique orientation with respect to the power drive shaft and carries a plurality of reduction gears of decreasing radius. The reduction gears are mounted on the transmission drive shaft on a spherical mounting race which permits the reduction gear to have an axis of rotation oblique to the axis of the transmission drive shaft and parallel with the axis of the power drive shaft. The spherical mounting race includes projections which are housed in elongated recesses within each reduction gear. Such projections lock the reduction gears in rotation with the transmission drive shaft and provide for power transmission from the power drive shaft, through the respective drive gear and reduction gears, and into the transmission drive shaft. This oblique orientation of the transmission drive shaft and mounting structure for reduction gears having parallel rotational axes with the drive shaft permit alignment of each reduction gear at a common edge and along a parallel line with the power drive shaft.

A variable speed and direction power transmission attachment for driving the cutting tool carriage of a lathe or the like, the attachment having sets of intermeshing male and female cog gears. Certain of such sets each comprises a face gear having a plurality of concentric rows of tooth socket elements formed therein. A male cog gear is selectively settable to mesh with any of such rows to change the gear ratio. By changing the combined setting of different sets of gears, a wide variation in overall gear ratio may be obtained to provide many different feeding speeds of the carriage, suitable for general cutting and for screw thread cutting. A reversing mechanism, also constructed of intermeshing cog gears, enables the direction of drive to be reversed or the drive to be disconnected to permit manual drive of the carriage.

An irrigation tower structure is provided including support and drive wheels for supporting and driving the tower from and over ground to be irrigated. The tower has a driven shaft journalled therefrom and wheel driving shafts journalled therefrom. A plurality of numerically high ratio sets of meshed gears drivingly connect the driven shaft to the wheel driving shafts and each set of meshed gears includes a first gear mounted on a support shaft therefor and having a plurality of rollers generally paralleling, supported from and spaced equally about and radially outwardly from the support shaft and a second gear mounted on a support shaft therefor including an outer peripheral portion defining a plurality of outwardly opening notches formed in and spaced about the outer peripheral portion, the first gear of each set being meshed with the second gear of the corresponding set with the rollers of each first gear successively engageable in the notches spaced about the outer peripheral portion of the corresponding second gear.
