    Abstract: A slide surface construction of a slide bearing is formed of an aggregate of two different metal crystals. The sliding condition of a first region of the slide bearing is more severe than that of a second region. The (2hhh) oriented metal crystals having a body-centered cubic structure with their (2hhh) planes (by Miller indices) oriented toward a slide surface exist in the first region. The content S.sub.2hhh of the (2hhh) oriented metal crystals is set in a range of S.sub.2hhh .gtoreq.20%. These crystals have a high hardness and are in the form of fish-like metal crystals in the slide surface and hence, an aggregate of these metal crystals has a good oil retention. The (hhh) oriented metal crystals having a body-centered cubic structure with their (hhh) planes (by Miller indices) oriented toward a slide surface exist in the second region. The content S.sub.hhh of the (hhh) oriented metal crystals is set in a range of S.sub.hhh .gtoreq.40%. These crystals are in the form of hexagonal pyramid-shaped metal crystals and hence, an aggregate of these metal crystals has a good oil retention. Thus, it is possible for the two regions with different sliding conditions to exhibit an excellent sliding characteristic.

    Abstract: A method of reinforcing threads. Firstly, provide a workpiece. Secondly, determine the position on the workpiece that a hole is to be drilled and into which threads are to be tapped. Thirdly, bore an opening in the workpiece which transversely intersects the hole. The opening must have a diameter which is greater that a diameter of the hole. Fourthly, insert an insert into the opening in interference fit relation. The insert is of a harder material than the workpiece. Fifthly, bore the hole through the workpiece and into the insert. Sixthly, tap threads in the hole, such that a portion of the threads are reinforced by virtue of being tapped into the harder material of the insert.

    Abstract: A cast piston which includes a metal insert and a combustion bowl, with the metal insert defining a sharp undercut structure at an upper portion of the combustion bowl. The sharp undercut structure of the insert contains combustible gases and helps improve emissions. The metal insert also strengthens the head of the piston. The cast piston is fabricated by positioning the metal insert in a casting mold and casting a piston in the mold. The final shape of the combustion bowl is produced by a machining process which forms the sharp undercut structure on the insert.

    Abstract: A novel, internal combustion engine includes a cylinder, a head closing one end of the cylinder and a piston slidably mounted in the cylinder for reciprocating motion, in the usual manner, which reciprocation is converted into rotary motion by, for example, a conventional crankshaft. The top surface of the piston, cylinder head and cylinder serve as walls defining a system chamber, with a pocket formed in one of the system chamber walls for receiving fuel and serving as a combustion chamber for localized combustion therein. In one disclosed embodiment, the cylinder is divided into two sections with thermal insulation, serving as a heat barrier, disposed between the two sections and the piston has a hollow interior containing one or more heat shields spanning the hollow interior. The method of operation involves injection of fuel into a restricted area within the chamber defined between the piston head, cylinder head and cylinder, e.g., the aforementioned pocket. Air and/or exhaust gas within the chamber surrounding the restricted area of localized combustion serves as thermal insulation, protecting the cylinder walls. Operation is suitably with a peak gas temperature of 900.degree.-1100.degree. C. and a peak gas pressure of 500-1000 psi. Air is introduced in an amount providing 4-5 times the stoichiometric amount of oxygen.

    Abstract: In an internal combustion engine with a reciprocating movement which uses gasoline, diesel fuel or other fuels to generate forces when fuels attain explosive combustion, the piston is pushed in the inner cylinder. The motion of the piston with the reciprocating movement (straight motion) is transferred to a crank shaft having rotation motion, or the rotation motion of the crank shaft is transferred to the piston having straight motion (reciprocating movement). By such transfer, in order to use in compressed feed for fluids, when the connecting rod is provided with a universal joint type and a ball joint type, although the relative position errors and right angle are staggered within a given range, abnormal friction, noises and vibrations never take place. Accordingly, pollutions such as noise, vibration and noxious exhaust gases are dramatically reduced, fuels are surprisingly and significantly saved, and the life of the machine is doubly increased. Further, the piston is divided into a crown part and a skirt part, and the crown part is used with a piston ring in a conventional way. However, the skirt part is attached to a metal roller mounted on a metal bracket, or a metal plate or spring, and the piston is provided with an expansion property. Accordingly, the gap or clearance between the cylinder and the piston is completely removed, and maximum smoothing motion takes place when the piston is moved up and down. By such smoothing action of the piston, a state without tilt and slap is realized.
