Abstract: Disclosed are methods and systems to facilitate variation of timer duration. In particular, a relay node (RN) may be configured to be served by a base station (BS) over a relay backhaul air interface and may be configured to serve user equipment devices (UEs) over a relay coverage air interface. Also, the RN may be configured (i) to detect when a threshold error in communication occurs on the relay backhaul air interface, (ii) in response to detecting the threshold error in communication, to start a timer that runs for a timer duration, and (iii) to respond to expiration of the timer duration by engaging in management of the relay backhaul air interface. With these arrangements, the RN may determine a count of how many UEs are being served by the RN over the relay coverage air interface and may set the timer duration based on the determined count of UEs.

Abstract: A method and system to assign a contention-free access resource is disclosed. A first network may be configured to serve user equipment devices (UEs) according to a first protocol and a second network may be configured to serve UEs according to a second protocol. The method involves the first network detecting an attempt to set up a circuit-switched-fallback (CSFB) call between (i) a UE served by the first network and (ii) a remote party, where the CSFB call is to be served by the second network to which the UE would transition to be served with the CSFB call. The method further involves, in response to detecting the attempt to set up the CSFB call, the first network assigning a contention-free access resource to the UE, so as to allow a contention-free access request by the UE to the first network.

Abstract: A computing system such as an alert originator may provide an interface through which a user (e.g., an employee of a public safety agency) may input a definition of a target area for distribution of a prospective alert. Upon receiving a target-area definition, the computing system may then request and receive a definition of an actual area in which the prospective alert would be distributed—which is composed of the coverage areas in which each participating wireless carrier networks would distribute the prospective alert. In turn, the computing system may present the user with a depiction of the actual distribution area for the prospective alert (e.g., an overlay of a geospatial shape on a map graphic), which enables the user to assess the actual distribution area and decide whether to refine the target geographic area for an alert before that alert is distributed.

Abstract: Disclosed are methods and systems for selecting a carrier on which to serve a user equipment device (UE). In particular, a base station may determine that a speed of movement of the UE is threshold high. In response to determining that the speed of movement of the UE is threshold high, the base station may select a carrier based on a group delay variation (GDV) of the selected carrier. For example, the base station may respond to the determining by selecting a carrier having a threshold low GDV. In another example, the base station may respond to the determining by selecting the carrier having the lowest GDV among two or more candidate carriers being considered as part of the selection process. As such, once a carrier is selected, the base station may then serve the UE on the selected carrier.

Abstract: Disclosed are a method, apparatus, and system for authenticating a communication session between a user equipment device (UE) and a communication network. A first authentication of a UE is performed by generating an authentication key, transmitting the authentication key over a first communication link from the UE to a communication network, authenticating the UE using the authentication key, and generating an authentication result indicative of authenticating the UE. A second authentication of the UE is performed to authorize a communication session over a second communication link between the UE and the communication network. The second authentication includes transmitting UE identifying information over the second communication link from the UE to the communication network and authenticating the UE using the UE identifying information and the authentication key. The second communication link is established under an internet protocol. After performing the second authentication, the communication session is authorized.

Abstract: A radio access network may determine that a hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) transmission schedule of a wireless air interface defined by the RAN includes time-division-multiplexed slots that are subject to HARQ acknowledgment bundling and time-division-multiplexed slots that are not subject to HARQ acknowledgment bundling. The RAN may assign, to relay base stations served by the RAN, time-division-multiplexed slots of the wireless air interface that are not subject to HARQ acknowledgment bundling. The RAN may also assign, to non-relay wireless communication devices (WCDs) served by the RAN, time-division-multiplexed slots of the wireless air interface that are subject to HARQ acknowledgment bundling. The RAN may transmit, over the air interface, HARQ subpackets according to the transmission schedule and assignments of time-division-multiplexed slots.

Abstract: A method and system for bit-level protection in concurrent downlink coordinated multipoint transmission of bit groups to multiple user equipment devices (UEs) from multiple base stations. Multiple base stations each serving a respective UE and each having a separate bit stream to communicate to its respective served UE will define bit groups across the bit streams, such that each bit group includes at least one bit from each base station's bit stream. Each bit group will be transmitted as a multi-bit data symbol modulated onto a subcarrier frequency. Susceptibility to pairwise confusion between different data symbols due to misidentification of particular bits will be used to determine bit-level protection for various bit positions of the data symbols. Assignment of particular bits of each bit group to particular UEs will include consideration of bit-level protection, such that UEs with lower quality downlink properties will be assigned bits providing higher bit-level protection, and vice versa.

Abstract: A multi-mode mobile station includes a first interface for communicating with a first wireless network, such as a wireless wide area network (WWAN), and a second interface for communicating with a second wireless network, such as a wireless local area network (WLAN). While the multi-mode mobile station has a first connection with the first wireless network, the multi-mode mobile station establishes a second connection with the second wireless network. When the second connection is established, the second wireless network transmits an acknowledgement signal to the multi-mode mobile station. In response to the acknowledgment signal, the multi-mode mobile station disables the first connection with the first wireless network and powers down the first interface.

Abstract: A base station and a user equipment (UE) device may communicate over an air interface in a particular time division duplexing (TDD) configuration. The TDD configuration specifies a certain number of consecutive subframes for uplink communications and a certain number of consecutive subframes for downlink communications. A transmitter (either the UE device or the base station) may transmit data using transmission time interval (TTI) bundling with a bundle size of N. To select a set of N subframes to use to transmit the data, the transmitter may compare N to C, the number of consecutive subframes available to transmit the data. If N≤C, the N subframes in the set are consecutive subframes. If N>C, the set of N subframes includes C consecutive subframes and at least one additional subframe that is separated from the consecutive subframes by one or more subframes not in the set.
