A first mode provides reverse, neutral and low forward ranges, and a second mode provides a high efficiency forward range. Shifting between the first and second modes occurs synchronously, and at a zero speed of the second machine, contributing to an exceptionally smooth shift, and the machines are independently operated in motoring or generating modes to control drivetrain power flows while satisfying the vehicle power requirements.

A friction brake system in a vehicle has a spring apply force, a pressure release force and a solenoid release force. The solenoid release force is determined by the electrical dynamic brake capacity available at the vehicle powertrain. Under full braking conditions, when the electric dynamic brake absorption capacity is high, the solenoid release force is high and vice versa. The overall brake force requested is established by an operator input signal. The amount of dynamic braking, the amount of pressure release force and the amount of spring apply force are determined by the requested braking effort from the operator and the amount of dynamic braking that can be absorbed in an energy storage unit associated with the powertrain.

A hydraulic closed loop control for positioning a transmission shift rail and synchronizer fork has recesses on the rail and ports in a valve body in which the rail is disposed. Fluid flow between the ports as permitted by the rail recesses controls the position of valves which in turn control the position of the rail. The valves control the position of the rail by routing pressurized fluid to one of two opposing sides of a piston fixed to the rail in response to the flow of fluid from the valve body ports. The pressurized fluid moves the rail to a desired position with the flow of pressurized fluid being interrupted when that position is reached.

A power transmission has a housing comprised of an end support, a casing, an end cover, a converter housing, an input shaft, an output shaft and a pair of identically dimensional countershafts. A bushing and oil feed sleeve are positioned on each end of each countershaft for cooperating with the end support connecting the housing for alignment therebetween and with the casing for alignment therebetween. Each countershaft has a pair of ratio gears rotatably disposed thereon and meshing with respective output gears rotatable with the output shaft and a friction clutch is provided for each ratio gear. Four of the friction clutches which are disposed on the countershafts are identical in construction. A fifth clutch assembly, in line with the input shaft, can be shortened, if desired, by the elimination of one friction plate and one reaction plate. Each clutch has an apply piston which cooperates with respective lube passages formed in the shaft to control lubricant and cooling flow to each respective clutch during engagement. A reverse gear pair has one gear member connectible to one countershaft by a synchronizer clutch and one of the friction clutches and the other gear member drivingly connected with a ratio gear on the other countershaft. A park pawl secured to one of the reverse gear members is provided to obtain a park gear having a torque ratio greater than one with the output shaft thereby providing improved disengagement loading in the park system.

The support structure maintains the rotor at a distance from the transmission main shaft to maintain torque within the system while compacting packaging requirements. A second cantilevered support structure is wineglass-shaped to create a second area of packaging space between the rotor and the main shaft. The support structures may be telescoped to further compact the transmission.
