Abstract:
A method of partially eliminating the field oxide bird's beak over a storage cell and slightly enlarging the storage cell active area without adding any process steps is described. A photomask is used during a buried contact etch to reduce the field oxide bird's beak both vertically and horizonally. The storage cell active area is further enlarged during a first polysilicon etch step without adding process steps. At that point, the wafer is completed by existing techniques.
Abstract:
A method is provided for forming and associating a lower section of a large-area field emission device (“FED”) that is sealed under a predetermined level of vacuum pressure with an upper section of a large-area FED. The upper section of the FED includes a faceplate. A first conductive layer is disposed on a surface of the faceplate. A matrix member is disposed on a surface of the first conductive layer, and cathodoluminescent material is disposed on the first conductive layer in areas not covered by the matrix member. The method includes disposing a plurality of spacers between the upper and lower sections of the FED to provide a predetermined separation between the upper and lower sections, with the spacers having cross-sectional shapes commensurate with stresses exerted on the spacers and/or heights commensurate with stresses exerted on the spacers. Resulting FED structures are disclosed.
Abstract:
A radio frequency communication device and method for tuning an antenna attached thereto are disclosed. A radio frequency communication device is disclosed comprising internal circuitry and an antenna having a plurality of antenna segments associated therewith. Each antenna segment is associated with the antenna in either series or parallel relation through at least one of a fuse and an antifuse. In testing and tuning, a comparison is made to indicate whether the antenna is too short or too long. If the antenna is too short, an antenna segment may be attached to the antenna by initiating an antifuse. If the antenna is too long, an antenna segment may be detached from the antenna by blowing a fuse. If it is indeterminate whether the antenna is too short or too long, an antenna segment may be either attached or detached, the test repeated, and the results of the repeated test compared with the prior test to determine whether the correct action was taken.
Abstract:
An apparatus and a method for stabilizing the threshold voltage in an active matrix field emission device are disclosed. The method includes the formation of radiation-blocking elements between a cathodoluminescent display screen of the FED and semiconductor junctions formed on a baseplate of the FED.

Abstract:
A process is disclosed for anodically bonding an array of spacer columns to one of the inner major faces on one of the generally planar plates of an evacuated, flat-panel video display. The process also includes an evacuated flat-panel display having spacer structures which are anodically bonded to an internal major face of the display, as well as a face plate assembly manufactured by the aforestated process.
Abstract:
A flat panel display and process for forming and the flat panel display having an anodically bonded array of spacer columns to one of the inner major faces on one of the generally planar plates of an evacuated, flat-panel video display. The process including providing a generally planar plate having a plurality of spacer column attachment sites; providing electrical interconnection between all attachment sites, coating each attachment site with a patch of oxidizable material; providing an array of unattached permanent glass spacer columns, each unattached permanent spacer columns being of uniform length and being positioned longitudinally perpendicular to a single plane, with the plane intersecting the midpoint of each unattached spacer column; positioning the array such that an end of one permanent spacer column is in contact with the oxidizable material patch at each attachment site, and anodically bonding the contacting end of each permanent spacer column to the oxidizable material layer.
Abstract:
Method and apparatus for ensuring that, in a portable, battery-powered communication package incorporating at least two communication devices, such as a combination cellular telephone and a pager, sufficient power is provided for extended operation of the communication device having the lowest continuous power consumption requirements when the device having a higher continuous power consumption rate has consumed a selected portion of the total power initially available to the combined devices.
Abstract:
A high resolution field emission display includes a faceplate and a baseplate. The faceplate includes a transparent viewing layer, a transparent conductive layer formed on the transparent viewing layer and intersecting stripes of light-absorbing, opaque insulating material formed on the transparent conductive layer. The insulating material defines openings less than one hundred microns wide between the intersecting stripes. The faceplate also includes a plurality of localized regions of cathodoluminescent material, each formed in one of the openings. The cathodoluminescent material includes a metal oxide providing reduced resistivity in the cathodoluminescent material. Significantly, the reduced resistivity of the cathodoluminescent material together with the focusing effect of the insulating material provide increased acuity in luminous images formed on the faceplate. The baseplate includes a substrate, an emitter formed on the substrate and a dielectric layer formed on the substrate and having an opening formed about the emitter. The baseplate also includes a conductive extraction grid formed on the dielectric layer and having an opening formed about the emitter.
Abstract:
A method for cleansing the phosphor screen of a display device comprising the removal of oxygen or sulfur from the surface of the phosphor, and/or its associated binder material, to a depth that prevents oxygen diffusion from the phosphor and/or binder, thereby creating an oxygen deficient surface on the phosphors.
